Johann Sebastian Bach

Born 1685     Died 1750

Johann Sebastian Bach was one of the world's greatest composers. He lived and wrote his music in an historical period called The Baroque. He is often referred to as a Baroque composer.

Bach was born in Eisenach Germany on March 21, 1685.

All over Germany members of the Bach family were famous musicians.

Bach's mother died when he was nine and his father died when he was ten. Bach moved in with his brother and lived with him until he turned fifteen.

Bach's older brother taught him how to play the harpsichord and the pipe organ. Bach became a great organist, violinist and composer. Bach was the Director of Music or Cantor at many famous courts and churches in Germany.

Bach wrote more music than almost any other composer. He wrote pieces for the organ, harpsichord, clavier, choir, orchestra, and for many solo instruments such as oboe, violin, flute and cello. His music is so well crafted and composed that even now performers from all over the world still play his music.

Johann Sebastian Bach had a happy family life, even though his first wife died (which was very sad). Bach remarried and had a total of twenty children. A number of these children also died from many of the diseases that were fatal in those days. Besides writing music for the Dukes and the church, Bach composed many little pieces for his children.

During the last two years of his life, Bach became blind. He died in July of 1750.
