Hello to all Kelvin Parents/Guardians
A presentation on the Cafeteria Committee/Winnipeg School Division Nutrition Policy will take place at the next Parent Council Meeting on Thursday, April 17, 2008.
A very big thank you to Mavis Meisner-Symak and the parents who contributed items for the Staff Appreciation Breakfast on Friday, February 29: Sandy Allen, Risa Altman, Mike Armstrong, Greg Athayde, Leslie Braun, Franca Cannata, Lynn DeVisscher, Andrea Firth, Laurie Guest, Heather Hawley, Laurel Hyde, Janice Kenworthy, Milli Khan, Allison Koots, Wendy Kroeker, Ann Mackay, Cheryl McMillan, Miriam Metcalfe, Myriam Ngo, Carolynn Osborn, Jane Penner, Jacquie Perreault, Cathy Purchase, Deb Schon, Steve Schwartz, Jim Scott and Sherri Walsh. The staff thoroughly enjoyed a delicious and nutritious light breakfast and snacks throughout the day!
The Government of Manitoba has directed that, as of September 2009, Grade 11 and 12 students will require 2 physical education/health education credits in addition to the 2 credits from Grades 9 and 10, in order to graduate. Each of the senior grades may use an out-of-classroom delivery option for a portion of the 110 full credit hours requirement. The objective of the new policy is to "encourage active, healthy lifestyles that have a lasting, positive effect on our young people" by means of "shared responsibility among teachers, schools, parents/guardians, families and communities" (Implementation of Grades 11 and 12 Physical Education/Health Education- A Policy Document, Manitoba Citizenship, Education and Youth, 2007).
When the annual total of PE/HE credit hour requirements for the approximately 1350 Kelvin students is determined to be 148,500 hours or 14,850 hours for each of the 10 slots over 2 semesters, it is expected that scheduling will be complicated and difficult. In addition, there may be insufficient school and community facilities to provide for the requirement. Kelvin has one gym for the physical education of students. If 50% of credit hours or 55 hours per semester are provided by an out-of-classroom option, then the gym would be expected to accommodate approximately 65 students in each of 5 slots per day. Community and after hours sport activities would be expected to accommodate 37, 125 credit hours per semester or approximately 1,856 credit hours per week.
A second Kelvin gym, which has been supported by the Winnipeg School Division for several years, is urgently required. Funds for large capital projects are allocated by the Public Schools Finance Board according to the Public Schools Finance Board Act of Manitoba. Additional gym facilities could be used by members of the local community to support the lifelong pursuit of an active and healthy lifestyle. Kelvin students have put forward a potential design for the second gym. Kelvin PAC has decided to place the requirement for a second gym on the Agenda for discussion at each Parent Council Meeting.
Parents are welcome to suggest topics for presentation to PAC and to raise general concerns at PAC Meetings for discussion by the group.

New Bleachers
In 2005 new bleachers were installed in the
gymnasium. The Athletic Department is trying to bolster their budget by
selling seats in the new bleachers.
For $20, your name will be placed on a plaque, measuring 21/4
by 11/4 inches, which will be permanently installed on the seat
that you choose, acknowledging your donation. If you are interested
please contact Mr. Shynkaruk @ the school, 474-1492.
