  GSAs United

On Dec. 7, Kelvin’s GSA gathered at the U of W for an afternoon of workshops and connection with other GSAs in the city.  The event was organized so that we could meet other people and see what they are doing in their schools, as well as share our experiences.  Organizations involved included the LGBTQ* Collective (U of W), Rainbow Pride Mosaic (U of M), The Rainbow Resource Centre, The Winnipeg Police Service, and local GSAs.

  Gay Pioneers

On Nov. 20 GSA members viewed the documentary "Gay Pioneers"  at the U of W. The film depicted the struggles of LGBTT people in the US during the 1960s.  Following the film, the audience participated in a panel discussion with the producer of the film about the differences between the US and Canada regarding LGBTT rights.

Rainbow Fest 2004

On October 13, 2004 the Gay-Straight Alliance staged Rainbow Fest.  We had a concert by Winnipeg band Brat Attack and a name your own price bake sale.  This was all done in a successful attempt to raise funds for the Gay-Straight Alliance.  Thanks to all the students and volunteers that mad this all possible.  This just shows that Kelvin is a supportive and welcoming environment for everyone.

Kelvin’s Day of Silence:  April 28, 2004

On April 28th Kelvin High School joined other schools across North America and organized Kelvin’s first “ Day of Silence”. The event was organized by Kelvin’s Gay-Straight Alliance.

Students who wished to participate wore ribbons and held their tongues to publicly demonstrate support of gay, lesbian, bisexual,, two-spirited, and transgender people who are silenced by fears of isolation, rejection, and persecution.  Students volunteered to run a table where other students could come ask questions, collect resources, and get ribbons.  At lunch 25-30 students gathered to watch a movie comedy about gender roles.  Kelvin officially ended its Day of Silence at 3:30 pm, when 35 students met to discuss their experiences.

The discussions truly showed what the Day of Silence is all about, and many students spoke of now realizing what it is like to be unable use your voice and feeling you have to remain silent about your life.  Over all, other students at Kelvin were respectful of participants.  A very small number of students were hostile towards Day of Silence participants and, when confronted by peers (with discriminating comments), students  “unable” to defend themselves said that it gave them a real idea of what GLBTT youth experience.

Participation was incredible, 200+ students wore ribbons and our staff showed their support by wearing “Rainbow Ally” stickers.

Kelvin’s Day of Silence truly showed that Kelvin is striving to create a safe and welcoming space for all students.
