Charter of Rights and Responsibilities
This Charter was drafted by the Human Rights School Committee composed of Kelvin staff, students and parents under the leadership of Mr. Paul Normandeau and was ratified by students in the 1991-1992 school year.
Preamble:
Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and
inalienable rights of all members of the Kelvin community is the foundation
of justice and tolerance in our school.
Whereas it is essential to promote the development of friendly relations between ethnic and cultural groups within our school community.
Whereas the citizens of Kelvin's community believe in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person and in the equal rights of the different sexes, ethnic and cultural groups, and have determined to promote tolerance and respect for differences in our school community.
Whereas each individual has pledged to achieve, in co-operation with the school, the promotion of universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms.
Whereas Kelvin High School subscribes to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the United nations Universal Declaration of Human rights.
Now therefore, Kelvin high School proclaims this Kelvin Declaration Human Rights as a common standard for all members of the Kelvin community and to that end, every individual, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures to secure their recognition and observance at our school and beyond.
Article 1
Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, sexual orientation, language, religion, political or other opinion, national, or social origin, property, birth and physically or mentally challenged.
Article 2
All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights . They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act responsibly towards one another in a spirit of complete community. Everyone has the right to recognition everywhere as a person at school and to be addressed in a respectful manner.
Article 3
Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and the security of person. No one shall be subjected to harassment or to cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment or punishment as a member of the Kelvin Community. This implies that everyone will act responsibly in their dealings with one another.
Article 4
No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with one's privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon one's honour and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the school against such interference or attacks.
Article 5
Everyone has the right to freedom of thought ,conscience and religion; this includes the right to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas responsibly and at the appropriate times.
Article 6
Everyone has the right to take part in the student council, directly or indirectly, through freely-elected representatives.
Article 7
Everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association at the proper times; this right includes the freedom to start clubs and associations and to belong to them.
Article 8
Everyone has the right to rest and leisure at reasonable scheduled times, including reasonable limitation of study and learning hours and periodic holidays without designated study.
Article 9
Everyone has the right to education; this includes the right to intellectual development along academic, technical, aesthetic, moral, physical, professional and any other lines that enhance the all-around personal growth of the student.
Furthermore, education at Kelvin shall promote and strengthen understanding, tolerance and friendship among the school community.
Implied in the above are the following:
a) that students are to be responsible and accountable for their learning;
b) that teachers' professional judgement and expertise be respected by the
Kelvin community;
c) that teachers and students have both the right and responsibility to create
the necessary environment for learning.
Article 10
Parents in conjunction with students and teachers, have a right to choose the kind of education that students receive, and to have knowledge of their child's learning and school community life.
Article 11
The Kelvin community has the right to work and learning a clean physical environment. This environment includes the condition of the cafeteria, hallways, classrooms and all other public areas in and surrounding the school.

Tout le monde est intitulé à tous les droits et libertés inclus dans cette déclaration, sans aucune distinction telles la race, la couleur, le genre, l'orientation sexuelle, la langue, la religion, l'opinion politique ou autre opinion, l'origine national ou social, la propriété, la naissance, et les défis physiques ou mentales.
Article 2
Tous les humains sont nés libres et égaux avec la dignité et les droits. Ils sont dotés avec la raison et la conscience et devraient se comporter responsablement vers les autres dans l'esprit d'une communauté complète. Chacun.e a le droit à la reconnaissance tout partout comme une personne à l'école et devrait être adressé.e dans une manière respectueuse.
Article 3
Chaque personne a le droit à la vie, à la liberté et à la sécurité personnelle. Personne ne sera sujet à l'harcèlement ou à des actes cruels, inhumains ou dégradants comme membre de la communauté de Kelvin. Cela implique que tout le monde va agir responsablement envers les autres étudiant.e.s de l'école Kelvin.
Article 4
Personne ne devrait être sujet à l'interférence arbitraire avec leur vie personelle, avec leur famille, avec leur vie chez eux ou avec leur correspondance, ni aux attaques sur l'honneur et la réputation de quelqu'un. Tout le monde a le droit à la protection de l'école contre ses interférences ou attaques.
Article 5
Tout le monde a le droit à la liberté d'expression, de conscience et de religion; cela inclue le droit de tenir des opinions sans interférence et de chercher, de recevoir et de partager de l'information et des idées responsablement et aux temps appropriés.
Article 6
Tout le monde a le droit de participer au Conseil d'étudiants dirèctement ou indirèctement par des représentants élu.e.s librement.
Article 7
Tout le monde a le droit à la liberté de se réunir tranquillement et de s'associer aux temps appropriés. Ce droit inclue la liberté de créer des clubs et des associations et le droit d'en être membre.
Article 8
Tout le monde a le droit au repos et au loisir aux temps raisonablement planifiés. Cela inclue des limites raisonables des heures d'étude et d'enseignement et des congés périodiques sans étude désignée.
Article 9
Tout le monde à droit à une éducation; cela inclue le
droit au développement intellectuel selon des lignes académiques,
techniques, esthétiques, morales, physiques, professionnelles et toute
autre ligne qui agrémentent le développement global de
l'étudiant.e. De plus, l'éducation à Kelvin promouvoira
et renforcera la compréhension, la tolérance et l'amitié
dans la communauté scolaire Impliqués dans ce qui est dessus:
a) les étudiant.e.s seront responsables de leur apprentissage;
b) le jugement et l'expertise professionels des professeurs seront
respectés par la communauté de Kelvin;
c) les professeurs et les étudiant.e.s ont, tous les deux groupes,
le droit et la responsabilité de créer l'environnement
nécessaire pour l'apprentissage
Article 10
Les parents, en coöpération avec les étudiant.e.s et les professeurs, ont le droit de choisir le type d'éducation que reçoivent les élèves. Ils ont le droit de savoir ce qu'apprennnent leurs enfants et de leur vie communautaire à l'école.
Article 11
Tout le monde a le droit de travailler et d'apprendre dans un environnement propre et nette. Cela inclue tout la propriété de l'école et toute autre aire publique autour de l'école.
