Parent Advisory Council

Minutes of the meeting on October 2, 2007

Attendees:  Mike Armstrong, Greg Athayde, Leslie Braun, Jim Brown, Andrea Firth, Kim Gauthier, Milli Khan, Mavis Meisner-Symak, Cathy Purchase, Maria Silva and Illana Steele.

1.      Approval of Agenda

The meeting was called to order by Cathy Purchase.   The agenda was accepted by consensus.

2.      Correspondence           

      The list of correspondence received, on the reverse side of the agenda, is available for review.

3.      Student Report  

The Student Council election was held on October 1, 2007.  The President is Ashleigh Amposta and the Vice-President is Sarah Manteuffel. The Student Council has not yet met for the school year.

4.      Administration Report

      Nutrition Policy:  The administration and staff do not seize items which fall outside nutrition policy guidelines. Vending machines are stocked with items consistent with the nutrition policy. A committee consisting of staff, student, and Food Management Systems representatives is meeting to determine a relevant and appropriate cafeteria menu. Andrea Firth requested that the decisions of the Cafeteria Committee be presented in the next November Newsletter and posted on the Kelvin website.

      Student Safety: An incident on September 10, 2007 which was reported in the media, did not involve Kelvin students, did not occur on school property and did not occur during school hours. The incident was successfully resolved without violence by Ms. K. Gauthier. The School does have procedures to follow in the event of incidents with the potential for violence and has carried out tests of a lockdown situation.

      The Kelvin Sign: Mr. Jim Brown and parents reviewed previous discussions on the usefulness of an electronic message board.

      MOTION:  That the hand-placed letters in the text portion of the Kelvin message board be replaced with an electronic system.

      Moved by Leslie Braun. Seconded by Milli Khan. All in favour.

5.      Committee Reports

      French Immersion Advisory Committee:  Not assigned

      Financial Report: The balance in the account is $203.32.

6.      New Business

      Brochure for Parent Advisory Council

      The Parent Council Brochure, prepared by Andrea Firth, will be available for distribution at the November Parent/Teacher interviews.

      Parent Council Activities

      Parent Council has provided funds, obtained from lunch time sales of spring rolls and fresh fruit parfaits, for Student Council requests. The 2007-2008 Student Council will be requested to prepare a wish list. Suggestions for fundraising activities included grocery store coupons and lunchtime sales of perogies or veggies and dip.

      Parent Council provides a Staff Appreciation Breakfast prior to the Wellness Day in February.

      Topics for presentations

      A Proposal for a new gym at Kelvin, prepared by students, will be presented at the November meeting. Other suggestions for topics were the School Resource Officer, the Cafeteria Committee and Addictions Awareness.
