Student Presentation - Design for 2nd Gym

The 2006-07 Graphics Class had an assigned project to design a building.  One student group, which included those making this presentation, as well as other students who have since graduated, put in considerable time and developed a three-dimensional model of a proposed 2nd gym for Kelvin.  The gym would be a free-standing building elevated over the current staff parking lot, with parking underneath, a walkway to the second floor of the school, elevator into the gym, and lift on the stairs in the walkway.  The footprint would use only slightly more space than the current parking lot.  The design provides for after-hours community use and includes a reception area, office space, teacher office space and washrooms, public washrooms and change rooms, 4 volleyball courts/3 basketball courts, a 125 m track, mechanical room and space for the football program to store supplies.

The supervising teacher, Mr. Zonneveld noted the six students involved in the project had had minimal supervision - this was very much a student initiative.

It was noted the there is a need for additional gym space for the curriculum to be taught with the current enrolment.  The additional space would also enhance opportunities for both elite and recreational athletes at the school to participate in extra-curricular physical education programs.  Community access would improve funding possibilities.

The students were thanked for their initiative and hard work.

Student Report

Ashleigh and Sarah thanked the parent council for its support, as expressed in the October minutes.  Student Council activities in October included a sock hop (which was considered very successful).  Activities in November focus on cancer awareness and will include a hair cut event November 30th, with hair being donated for wigs.  The Council is working hard and usually has good attendance.  It is  working on its wish list.

Agenda

The agenda was approved with several additions under New Business.

            Athletics - Tier System

Discussion took place regarding high school sports, some of which are tiered (organized into levels with inter-school competitions matching teams of similar ability).  Not all sports are tiered. Information on tiering will be provided by the administration at the next PAC meeting.

            Athletics - Media Release

It was noted that some parents had signed media releases on the understanding the release applied to still photos.  It was then learned that a game was being shown live on the internet.  It should be clear what is being authorized when a release is signed.

Athletics - Staff Presence at Events

It was noted that Kelvin has a large number of teams which often play evening and weekend games.  Current Division policy requires a teacher from the team’s school to attend every game.  Following additional discussion, Kim agreed to obtain the Division policy and rationale for discussion at a future meeting.

Presentations at PAC

December - tiering

January - Class Act video

February - nutrition policy, Cafeteria Committee

Jim Brown entered the meeting.

November 19th incident - threat

Some concern has been expressed regarding safety at the school as a result of the two threats written on bathroom walls.  The Administration reports every such incident to the police and takes the advise given regarding action.  Parents are always notified.  Students have noted the 4-day weekend pattern.  Parents are willing to support/assist the Administration as required.

Meeting adjourned at 9:15 p.m.
