Presentation

Cindy Mittendorfer, head of the phys ed department, spoke about the history and current situation of tiering of high school sports.  Football is tiered, due to the number of teams.  Basketball is tiered and is in a multi-division conference- it took about 10 years to do.  Hockey is run separately - the school divisions do not administer the program.  Volleyball is not tiered and other divisions are not interested in being in a conference.  There is not consensus amongst coaches to change the current system.  Better-matched competition can be found in tournaments.

Decisions regarding the need for a teacher presence at all sports games are made by the Coaches and Administration Council for senior high schools.  The Council wants a teacher presence.  Tournaments are the main concern due to the amount of time involved.  It is expected that the hosting school will have staff present.  To date, Kelvin has been able to have a teacher presence.  Jim will put the request for consideration of non-teacher supervision of teams on the Coaches/Admin Council agenda.  It was suggested that Division volunteer coordinators could develop job descriptions and do screening for parent supervisors, so options will be available- meeting of team and on-going presence could be included.
