Mathematics – General Information

All students must obtain a credit in S1 (grade 9) math before proceeding to any other math courses.  There are 3 possible “S” streams: Consumer, Applied and Pre-Calculus.  The intent of these streams is described as follows:

Consumer 20S/30S/40S

For students who are not intending to pursue further math-related studies after graduation.  This is a “made-in-Manitoba” course that meets the requirements for high school graduation.

Applied 20S/30S/40S

This is a demanding course this is calculator/computer software and laboratory based.  It stresses application of the theory studied in the Pre-Calculus stream.  Students thinking of pursuing studies in Engineering, Architecture, Sciences and the like should consider this option.

Pre-Calculus 20S/30S/40S

This course is for students who will pursue post-secondary studies (usually involving Calculus) where high level mathematical skills will be further developed and

applied.  The course may also be taken for its challenging logical and problem solving aspects.

Advanced Mathematics/Calculus 45A

This course is intended for students who are particularly interested in Mathematics and intend to specialize in Math related courses ie: Calculus at university.

Students must have four mathematics credits to graduate.  They must accept responsibility for the requirements of the course they select.  This means to develop the necessary work and study habits for daily course work and test/exam writing.  All the course evaluations are cumulative which means daily revision of previous notes, assignments and tests is necessary.  Students are responsible for all missed notes and assignments and for standard supplies such as suitable calculators, geometry sets and writing materials.

Mathematics Contests

The math department provides opportunities for mathematically talented students to participate in the following math competitions:

   - Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (S4) (November) - University of Waterloo

   - Pascal (S1), Cayley (S2), Fermat (S3) (February) - University of Waterloo

   - University of Manitoba (S4) (February)

   - Fryer (S1), Galois (S2), Hypatia (S3) (April) - University of Waterloo

   - Euclid (S4) (April) - University of Waterloo
