¨ This is a semester course; the pace of this course is fairly fast. time management and organization are essential for success in this course
¨ Continual review is required. Regular attendance and punctuality is essential.
¨ Be aware that there is a greater emphasis on deadlines than you may be accustomed to.
¨ Make sure that you always bring the required supplies to class and keep your work organized in a binder.
Text: Essentials in Mathematics 10 (BC Ed. 2003)
Supplies: You will require the following items:
¨ a binder
¨ a coiled notebook
¨ pens/pencils, erasers, correction fluid etc.
¨ a geometry set and a ruler
¨ graph paper
¨ a scientific calculator
- the Casio FX-991 is recommended for this course
Note: A graphing calculator is NOT required for this course.
Evaluation: To earn your credit in this course, you must be present for 110 hours of instruction and receive a final course mark of at least 50%
Your Final Course mark is determined as follows:
15% -----Assignments
15% -----Tests and Quizzes
10% -----Mental Math
10% -----Group Collaboration
20% -----Portfolio Project
30% -----Final Examination (in June)

¨ Successful completion of this course requires that you not only receive a grade of 50% or greater, you must also be present for 110 hours of class time during this semester.
3. If you find yourself experiencing any difficulties in the course ask for help immediately!
4. Listen and follow Mr. Lloyd’s Instructions at all times
5. There is a fine line between having fun and fooling around – Don’t Cross It!
Frequently Asked Questions:
1. Can I bring food or drinks into the class?
¨ Water bottles or any kind of drink bottle / device with a secure lid are allowed
¨ NO FOOD
- This room is primarily a Lab. As a result, for safety reasons food is not allowed in this classroom.
2. Can I listen to music in class? (Personal CD player, MP3 player, iPod)
¨ASK MR. LLOYD FIRST!
- This class involves a degree of discussion and there are often a lot of good questions and additional instructions given. Close attention is often required.
3. What happen if I miss a test?
¨ For any excused absence: Stuff happens. Sometimes due to circumstances beyond your control you may miss or do poorly on a test. Should you find yourself in this situation and you have a verifiable excuse, you may write a make up test.
¨ Due to scheduling make up tests will occur on the following Friday at 3:35pm
¨ Should you miss a test due to any unexcused absence you will receive a mark of zero and you may not write a make up test!
4. What happens if I hand in assignments late?
¨ DON’T DO IT. The penalty for handing in assignments late is harsh!
¨ Now should you be sick or absent (with a verified reason) on the day an assignment was due then you may submit it without penalty on your first day back to class
5. What happens if I miss a class?
¨ The expectation in High School is that you become responsible for your learning. Should you miss a class (or classes) for any reason, it is your responsibility to make arrangements to get any information that you may have missed. This course moves very quickly so make sure that you get caught up as soon as possible!
6. How can I get extra help in Math?
¨ Peer Tutoring is available in the resource room (room 23) at lunch
¨ I will be running “Math 911” sessions at least once a week
¨ You can ask questions from me directly at almost anytime at Askmrlloyd@shaw.ca
