The primary purpose of the
Basic French curriculum is the learning of the French language as a means of
communication. The program is not designed to have students become bilingual.
In the Basic French program, French is not only the
subject of study but also the language of instruction. Throughout the program,
students participate in learning activities designed to:
develop the ability to
communicate in French, both orally and in writing
develop an awareness of
francophone culture in Canada and the world
develop an
understanding of French grammar
develop strategies for
understanding, speaking, reading, and writing French
develop strategies for
learning a second language
At each
grade level, students will participate in units of study that are built around
themes relating to the students’ interests and life experiences. Students will
be required to communicate in French in a variety of activities such as creating
and answering surveys, writing job resumes, role playing interviews, listening
to songs and giving reactions, inventing and presenting rules for new games,
reading and discussing excerpts from novels and plays, etc.
The Basic French
program provides the skills necessary for further study in French at the
post-secondary level.
