Fine Arts

All Fine Arts courses are single credit courses unless otherwise indicated.  Most courses at the S3 and S4 level have prerequisites without which the courses cannot be taken. There are no prerequisite requirements for the visual arts courses. All Fine Arts courses are optional supplementary.

 

Art

 

Art 10G, 20G, 30S, 40S                                              ARTR1G/2G/3S/4S

            The art program at all levels places strong emphasis on the personal and original presentation of ideas/themes through a wide variety of media - pencil, ink, conté, crayon, pastel etc.  Students work through a series of different units in art and learn methods of artistic inquiry which will help them solve artistic problems.  Note:  Technical skill is not a requirement.  Everyone has the potential to produce successful art work.

 

Art 15G (0.5 cr.)                                                         ARHR1G

            This is a half-credit art program for S1 (grade 9) students to explore a variety of ideas/themes through a wide variety of media  - pencil, ink, crayon, pastel etc. Students work through a series of different units in art and learn methods of artistic inquiry which will help them solve artistic problems.

 

Art & Design 32S, 42S                                               ARDB3S/4S

 

Art and Design is a higher level art program designed for motivated art students.

 

Year I - The first year is devoted to the attainment of fundamental skills in a variety of artistic activities: drawing, sculpture, acrylic and watercolour painting, basic printmaking, design and research workbooks.

Year II - The greater part of class time will be devoted to independent studio and sketchbook work and art-related excursions.  Year I is a prerequisite to Year II.

            Note:    Class size is limited and potential candidates for the Art & Design program must meet one of the following criteria:

                        a) High Achievement (A-level performance) in art at the S2 level and an interview with the art teacher.

                        b) Students registering in Kelvin for the first time at the S3 or S4 level or students who did not take art at the S2 level must present a substantial portfolio of work and complete an interview with the art teacher.

 

Drama

 

Drama 11G  (Senior 1 option - .5 credit)                    DAHY1G

            This S1 course emphasizes introductory units to drama.  Focus will include definition of drama, stage movement, imagination and sense recall, improvisation and script work.

 

Drama 20G - Acting                                                    DMAR2G

            The course emphasizes acting.  Focus will include believable action, movement, voice, improvisation and scripted works.


Drama 30S - Advanced Acting                                               DMAR3S

Prerequisite Drama 20G (DMAR2G)

            The course emphasizes advanced acting.  Focus will include character analysis, script interpretation, ensemble work and a class production.

 

Drama 40S - Directing                                                            DMAR4S

Prerequisite Drama 30S (DMAR3S)

            The course emphasizes directing and play production.  Focus will be the director’s book, technical units, playing humorous and serious scenes and producing one-act plays.

 

 

Music

 

Choral Music 10G/15G                                              CHOR1G/CHHR1G

            The S1 Choral class is for all students who enjoy making music with others.  In addition to the development of music reading and vocal skills, it will offer a variety of musical experiences, both vocal and instrumental. CHOR1G (1.0 credit) is offered outside the regular timetable. CHHR1G (.5 credit) is offered during the regular timetable. You may take either one or both, however, you may receive credit in only one.

 

Choir 20G/30S/40S                                                     CHOR2G/3S/4S

            The Kelvin Choir is open to all students wanting to participate in a high quality choral experience.  The choir performs on a number of occasions throughout the year and prepares a variety of choral literature.  No previous experience or proven ability is necessary for entry into this course, only an interest in making music with others. The course carries one full credit, and is scheduled before school and during noon hours to avoid conflict with other courses.  The level of the credit is dependant on the number of years the student has participated in the program.

 

Chamber Choir 21G/31G/41G                                    CHEY2G/3G/4G

            This course offers the student an opportunity to sing more challenging choral literature, much of it unaccompanied.  As much of the music will be relatively difficult, students will be required to demonstrate musical competence through an audition.  The choir will perform on a number of occasions through the year.  Members of the choir must also be registered in Choir 2G, 3S or 4S.

 

Band 10G  (Senior 1 option - 1 credit)                                   BANR1G

            This course is designed for students who already play a band instrument.  The program is based on playing and performing a varied repertoire with an emphasis on playing skills and theory.  It will be offered as a S1 option during the regular timetable.

 

Band 20G                                                                    BANR2G

            This course is designed for those students that wish to continue their studies in band. The focus will be on medium-difficulty repertoire of various styles. Band 10G is a pre-requisite for this course.


Band 30S/40S                                      BANR3S/4S

            This course is designed for students who already play an instrument at a high level and wish to participate in the wind ensemble. The program is based on playing and performing a varied repertoire with an emphasis on instrumental skills. This course carries one full credit, and will be scheduled before school and during noon hours to avoid conflict with other courses. The level of the credit is dependant on the number of years the student has participated in the program. This course is open to S1 and S2 by audition.

 

IB Music 32S/42S                                                       MUSB3S/4S

            While offered as a credit in the International Baccalaureate program, this course is open to any Kelvin student wishing advanced training in music.  The course includes rudiments of music (Theory and Harmony), and music history from earliest times to the present, and the music of other cultures.  It is a continuous course from S2 through S4.

 

Private Music Option

            The Private Music Option, music studied under private teachers, may be offered in each year of high school (up to three credits).  The requirements have been set up by the Universities and Departments of Education of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, acting throughout the Western Board of Music or the Royal Conservatory of Music.
