   Computers have widespread use in today’s society, in both the personal and professional aspects of life. It is important for students to extend their information and communication technology skills. To this end, Kelvin High School offers Computer Applications courses at each grade level, from Grade 9 to Grade 12. 

    It is a well-known fact that students need knowledge of business principles and accounting. Many of them may start a business of their own or work for an entrepreneur. At Kelvin, we also offer courses in business communications and accounting.  

    In addition, we offer Computer Science courses at each grade level. Computer Science teaches students problem-solving skills, and to become critical thinkers and good communicators. These courses teach students how to be innovative and inquiring. 

    Courses offered in the Computer Studies Department will give students the fundamental knowledge they need to be successful in the 21st century.

Grade 9

Applying Information and Communication Technology 1 15F (0.5 Credit)                ICTA1F

Please note that this course is open only to S1 French Immersion students. The English track students will take it through their ELA and Math courses.

Computers will be part of a student’s personal and professional life. It is imperative for students to become familiar with how to use computers for research, essays, and presentations. This course will concentrate on keyboarding skills through exercises in MS Word and Mavis Beacon software. As well, techniques in desktop publishing using MS Publisher, spreadsheets using Excel, and presentations using PowerPoint will be covered.

Applying Information and Communication Technology 2 15F (0.5 Credit)                 ICTB1F

(Applying Information and Communication 1 is integrated into Grade 9 English Program ELA and Math courses.)    

The purpose of the course is to reinforce and extend the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) knowledge, attitudes, and skills acquired by students in the Early and Middle Years. The course will further prepare students to use ICT to learn and demonstrate their learning in all Senior Years courses.

Students will learn to design electronic plans, including outlines, timelines, and storyboards, construct non-sequential web pages, create and manipulate images for digital stories, and produce multimedia presentations using a variety of software.

This course is designed for students interested in learning about how software is coded and created. The following computer programming concepts will be introduced: Basic structure of a program (Input, Processing, and Output), Data and Variables, Graphical Output, Decision Structures, Loops, Procedures, Design of Graphical User Interfaces, and Events.

Open to all students.

This is a practical course in computer programming. Students will learn how to create software for data processing, mathematical, and recreational purposes. It is an excellent course for anyone considering a career in accounting, computer studies, economics, engineering, management, mathematics, science, or any field requiring problem solving skills. Topics to be covered include: Use of an IDE, variables, mathematical functions, GUI building, program flow, strings, procedures, arrays, and use of files.

This course will also be offered as an IB stream course. 

Desktop Publishing 35S/Digital Pictures 25S                                                 DPHR3S/DPHR2S

Open to all students

This course is a must for any students who would like to learn the basics of communicating using desktop publishing and digital images. In this course students will develop the skills and knowledge to plan and create a variety of published print documents, and to convey a message using still images, text, and graphics. Using a variety of software, students will plan, develop, and produce a project using a narrative or a documentary format.

This course is designed for students who are interested in learning about the basic background of the world of business and the fundamental skills necessary to start and run their own businesses. Topics include an examination of the Canadian economy, entrepreneurship, financial management, and record keeping. 

Introduction to Networking Systems 21G                                                                     INSY2G

Open to students in Grade 10

The goal of this course is to introduce students to fundamental networking concepts and technologies. This course provides a hands-on introduction to networking and the Internet using tools and hardware commonly found in the home and small business environment. The online materials in CCNA Discovery 1 - Networking for Home and Small Businesses will assist students in developing the skills necessary to plan and implement small networks across a range of applications. This course prepares students with the skills needed to obtain entry-level Home Network Installer jobs. It also prepares them for some of the skills needed for Network Technician, Computer Technician, Cable Installer, and Help Desk Technician jobs. 

Print Communications 25S/Data Analysis 35S                                            PCHR2S/DCHR3S

Open to all students

The purpose of the course is to provide students with the skills and knowledge to plan and create documents for personal and business communications using Microsoft Word, and to collect, organize, manipulate, and analyze data using Microsoft Excel. These essential workplace skills will prepare students to be successful in school or in future employment.

Open to all students

No work experience? No references? No problem! Learn practical retail experience by operating and managing the school store, Kelvin Clipper Korner. This is a full-year course that runs at lunch time, with a flexible work schedule. Several KCK staff have used their school store work experience to help them obtain jobs in the retailing or service sectors.

Follow-up courses include Promotions 30S, Marketing Practicum 40S, and Management 40S.

Open to students in Grades 10, 11, or 12

This course is designed to introduce students to the concepts involved in keeping a set of financial records for a service business. Excel spreadsheets and Simply Accounting software will be used. Students will gain valuable information about managing personal finances and practices used in business. 

Computer Science 30S                                                                                                     COSR3S

Prerequisite: COSR2S

An intermediate-level course in computer programming using the Java programming language. Topics include: Use of an IDE, variables, program flow, an introduction to object-oriented programming, arrays, use of files, and searching /sorting algorithms. Students will also learn how to create Java applets using the Swing toolkit.  

Computer Science (IB) 32S                                                                                              CSSB3S

Prerequisite: COSR2S and registered in the IB program

This is the first of two computer science courses following the IB curriculum. Topics include: Use of an IDE, variables, program flow, an introduction to object-oriented programming, arrays, use of files, and searching / sorting algorithms. The programming language which will be used is Java. Students will also learn how to create Java applets using the Swing toolkit. Projects involving writing large programs will be implemented throughout the year.

The purpose of the course is to provide students with the skills and knowledge to design, develop, and deploy websites. Techniques for creating and using simple animation, digital photography, and streaming video and audio using various software programs will be used.

Prerequisite: Web Design/Interactive Media

Modern web applications involve the use of web, server, and database technologies. Integrating all three is an essential skill in the field of e-commerce. Students will design, develop, and deploy websites to display and gather information, using databases for back-end processing.

Open to students in Grades 11 or 12

Prerequisite: Introduction to Networking Systems or equivalent experience

This course builds upon the skills learned in Introduction to Networking Systems 21G. Following the CCNA Discovery 2 – Working in a Small-to-Medium Business or ISP curriculum, the goal of this course is to assist students in developing the skills necessary to provide customer support to users of small-to-medium-sized networks and across a range of applications. The course provides an introduction to routing and remote access, addressing and network services. It will also familiarize students with servers providing email services, web space, and Authenticated Access. This course prepares students with the skills required for entry-level Help Desk Technician and entry-level Network Technician jobs.

Students in this course operate the school store, Kelvin Clipper Korner, with a focus on promotional activities. See the Retailing 20S description for additional information. 

Visions and Ventures in Entrepreneurship 30S                                                             VIVR3S

Open to students in Grades 11 or 12

Learn how to transfer your ideas into profits. This course introduces students to the principles of business ownership and management. Concepts studied include market research and setting up and operating a new business, and managing an existing one – the school store, Kelvin Clipper Korner. The final project will consist of developing a business plan.

Accounting Systems 40S                                                                                                  ACSR4S

Prerequisite: Accounting Principles 30S

This course will satisfy the compulsory Grade 12 Math component for graduation. Red River College recognizes graduates of 40S Accounting allowing an exemption in the Business Administration program. Merchandising business accounting, bank reconciliation and cash controls are studied. Students are taught how to read and analyze financial statements to help businesses improve their profits. Computerized accounting will be used to teach the course. 

Advanced Business Communications 40S                                                                     AOAR4S

Prerequisite: Print Communications/Data Analysis

Building on the skills learned in Print Communications/Data Analysis, this course offers advanced features of MS Office as they apply to business applications.  

Computer Science 40S                                                                                                     COSR4S

Prerequisite: Computer Science 30S

Students will learn advanced topics in computer programming and create at least one large software application using the Java programming language. Topics include: Data Structures (Stacks, Queues, and Linked Lists), Binary Trees, Recursive Algorithms, and Random-Access Files.  

Computer Science (IB) 42S                                                                                              CSSB4S

Prerequisite: Computer Science (IB) 32S

This is the second of two computer science courses following the IB curriculum. Topics include: Data Structures (Stacks, Queues, and Linked Lists), Binary Trees, Recursive Algorithms, and Random-Access Files. The programming language which will be used is Java. A primary component of this course will be the creation of a major software application for the I.B. Computer Science Dossier, which is due in January.

Prerequisite: Promotions 30S or Marketing Practicum 40S

Students in this course manage the school store, Kelvin Clipper Korner, concentrating on the practical aspects of managing a small business, from scheduling shifts to record-keeping and inventory control. See the Retailing 20S description for additional information.

Networking 41G                                                                                                              NETY4G

Prerequisite: Networking 31G or equivalent experience

Students will build upon the skills learned in Networking 31G. Topics covered will include advanced operating systems management, user policies and security, computer troubleshooting, router configurations, LAN switching theory, and WAN technologies. Students will complete a network design project as a final exam. 

Seminar in Business 40S                                                                                                  SEBR4S

Prerequisite: VIVR3S

Discussions will be based on factors affecting a successful business and current trends in business. Project management techniques will be explored. The final exam consists of developing an integrated project.
