    Documents, articles, and images tell the story of Canadian Confederation.  An excellent source of information on the topic.

Canadian First Nations Resources
    A gateway site, providing annotated listings of sites focusing on Canadian First Nations (Aboriginal) issues.  A good starting point for web research in this area, and noteworthy for its Canadian content.

Canadian Olympians
   
The Canadian Olympians site provides a searchable images database of Canadian athletes at the Olympics, from the mid-1900s through 2000.

Canadian Science and Engineering Hall of Fame
    Scientists, engineers, and innovators whose discoveries have contributed outstanding scientific or technological achievements.

CanPix Gallery
    A great Canadian image base of over 3,500 pictures and audiovisual resources for Canadian students.  Search, view and extract images of important people, events, places, examples of Canadian culture, flags, coats of arms, flowers and maps of Canada and the provinces.

History Link 101
    A portal, offering links to other web sites and other web portals.  Each culture or era has sites presented according to the following categories:  Daily Life, Art, Pictures, Maps, Biographies, and Research.  Not all categories are treated in equal depth for each culture or era, but on the whole, History Link 101 has many useful links.

Hyper History Online    
    A synchronoptic (seeing at the same time) view of history which allows you to see inter-relationships between events, places, and people.  Although it takes a while catch on to its navigation, it does offer a variety of timelines for a variety of categories of information.

Ourworld.ca
    The Third World, foreign aid, global concerns -- this page offers a variety of resources and insights into international development issues.

World Flag Database
   
A frequently-updated database containing visuals and the history of flags: countries, territories, and sub-national regions are the focus of this site.

Canadian Studies and Canadian History 

Advertising for Immigrants to Western Canada
    Canada's Museum of Civilization has many exhibits depicting immigration to Canada.  This site highlights the Canadian government's aggressive advertising campaign, designed to lure farmers and farm workers in Britain, the United States, and Europe to "the last best west", western Canada.

The Canadian Wartime Experience: the Documentary Experience of Canada at War
    This site, hosted by the University of Manitoba's Special Collections and Archives, provides access to a collection of text documents and photos selected from a variety of collections.  A link is also provided to a site featuring the role of conscientious objectors during World War II.

Democracy at War:  Canadian Newspapers and the Second World War
    A searchable online archive containing a collection of more than 144,000 articles taken from the clippings of the Hamilton Spectator.  Most newspaper archives are available only on microfilm in major urban centres, so this is a unique resource.  As well, the site, from the Canadian War Museum, is available in both English and French.


Dictionary of Canadian Biography On-Line
    The online DCB/DBC presents biographies of significant figures in Canadian
history written by leading authorities. It spans the years from 1000 to 1920
in 14 volumes. Available in both official languages.

National Historic Sites (Parks Canada)
    Canada's national park system is home to a series of commemorations of historically-significant persons, places, and things.  This web-site provides lists of the various places where such commemorations can be found.

New France - New Horizons
    A joint project of the Direction des Archives de France and the Nation Library and Archives Canada -- documents and images of the French experience in North America are provided on this site.

Parliament Hill
    Titled "A Treasure to Explore", this offers a "virtual" tour of the grounds, Peace Tower, office blocks, and Library of Canada's Parliament Buildings.

Pier 21
    For many immigrants, Pier 21, Halifax, NS, is the site of their first landing in Canada. This site commemorates and celebrates this historic port of entry to Canada.  

Underground Railroad in Canada
   
Canadian and American history has intersected at many points - the search for freedom from slavery led many African-Americans to seek freedom in Canada, following a secret network of routes, known as the Underground Railroad. Check the "Related Links" and "Commemorations" for more information.

    Climate change, the rivers of Canada, and the usual "where-to-find it" information.  Hosted by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society of Canada.


National Atlas of Canada 
    Whether you need to know the name of Canada's longest river, highest mountain, or the largest islands, this on-line Canadian atlas has it.  Also available are population statistics and interesting geographical facts.

Geological Survey of Canada (GASC)
    The GSC is Canada's premier agency for geoscientific information and research, with world-class expertise focusing on geoscience surveys, sustainable development of Canada's resources, environmental protection, and technology innovation. It is a part of the Earth Sciences sector of Natural Resources Canada and provides information on Canada's landscape and earth forms.

Map Machine (National Geographic Magazine)
    National Geographic Magazine's Map Machine offers a variety of maps:  world maps, U. S. maps, historical maps, and much more.  An excellent source of current mapped information.

Mapping Canada (Canadian Geographic Magazine)
    Canadian Geographic's "Mapping Canada" offers a changing map of Canada through its history.  Click a date on the time-line and see how the map changes.

National Atlas of the United States
    The focus of this atlas is not on maps, but on information about the United States, its geography and socio-cultural landscape. 

 


World War I

In Flanders Fields Museum
    This museum in Ieper (formerly Ypres), Belgium, offers a number of
visual and textual resources about the Great War 1914-18 (i.e World War I), much of which took place nearby. Note that some of the content depicts great destruction and is disturbing.

World War I - Trenches on the Web
    Weapons, maps, biographies, documents, photos, poster facsimiles, and vignettes of daily life during the "War to end all wars."

The Battle of Britain History Site
   
Hosted by the Royal Air Force (RAF), this site presents text and audio clips chronicling the Battle of Britain.

German Propaganda Archive
    This page presents a collection of translated speeches, flyers, pamphlets, posters, cartoons, and essays -- all were used as propaganda promoting either the Nazi or East German regimes.
