École J. B. Mitchell School is an elementary dual track school, offering an English Program from Nursery to Grade 6 and a French Immersion Program from Kindergarten to Grade 6. The school is located on John Brebeuf Place and Lanark Street. John Brebeuf Place is a short street running parallel to Corydon Avenue and Grant Avenue in the west River Heights area. The school's philosophy is, first and foremost, one unified school with two programs and eight different levels (Nursery to Grade 6). The classrooms in the building are separated by age groupings and not by languages. Nursery To register, your child must be 4 years of age by December 31 of the registration year. This program is only offered in the English language. The first priority is to accommodate students from the catchment area of the school, and then those children who are from within the Winnipeg School Division boundaries who register in advance ( by June 30th ). Children who reside out of the boundaries of the Winnipeg School Division are not eligible to attend the Nursery program. Students attend on a daily basis, mornings or afternoons. The start time and duration of this program is governed by decisions made at the School Board Level. Kindergarten to Grade 6 English Program This program is the regular English Curricular Program typical of those taught in most schools in Winnipeg School Division. The Basic French Program begins in Grade 1 and continues to Grade 6. Students in grades 4, 5, and 6 receive 30 minutes of Basic French daily. The Exposure French Program at the Grades 1, 2 and 3 level is approximately 15 minutes daily. Kindergarten to Grade 6 French Immersion Program For those not familiar with the French Immersion Program, these students receive most of the daily instruction in the French Language. The program is primarily intended for Anglophones who want to learn a second language by being immersed in it. Students in Kindergarten receive all of their instruction in the French language in order to attune their ears to the language. From Grades 1 - 6 the students receive between 60 - 75 minutes of English Language Arts instruction daily. They receive their music classes in the English language from the music teacher. All other subjects including physical education are taught in French. There is no Nursery program in French. As well as all the academic components, the school offers much student involvement in different areas. Primary choir (Grade 1 - 3), and intermediate choir (Grades 4 - 6) are at the option of the students. Our school offers a variety of lunch time activities on a regular basis such as intramural sports programs. Other activities may be offered pending the availability of instructors. Students are also encouraged to participate in inter-school activities. Students, regardless of their athletic abilities, are on the "team" as long as they come to practice. |
