The J. B. Mitchell Program for Deaf / Hard of Hearing Students is a specialized support program available to eligible students from across the Winnipeg School Division No. 1. The mission of this cluster program is to provide supports more varied and intensive than those available to students in home school, integrated settings.
The deaf / hard of hearing students are included in all aspects of the regular classroom programs. In addition to the regular curriculum, the students receive programming to develop their communication skills and to develop their awareness / knowledge of coping and living as a deaf / hard of hearing individual. Special programming goals are outlined in each child's Individual Education Plan.
The services of the Teacher of the Deaf and Teaching Assistants are available on a full-time basis. A Speech-Language Pathologist provides support to the students on a quarter-time basis. Audiological services are provided on an on-going basis. If needed, students may also receive support from Social Work, Psychology, Psychiatry, Occupational / Physiotherapy and a Reading Clinician.
