The grade one and two students in Ms. Amaram's class did an author/illustrator
study of Eric Carle. The students read and heard many of his stories including The
Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Grouchy Ladybug, The Very Lonely
Firefly. After discussing the story, we focused on the style of his artwork.
We watched a video and learned he creates his own paper for his collages. We
used some of his techniques to create our own paper. The students splatter
painted, finger painted, etched and used special texture tools to create their
own paper. The students mixed and experimented with color and above all, used
their imagination to create a variety of splendid paper. After, the students
created their own collage masterpieces in Eric Carle's style. Now, can you tell
the difference between his work and the work of these very special students?
