Text Box: May Music News

During the month of May we will be focusing on music from various cultures as we recognize our multi-cultural month. If you have a song that is special to you in your culture you can let Mrs. Peters know so you can share it with your class.

There continues to be lots of activity in the Music Room:
Monday, May 5 is Music Monday. Music Monday, sponsored by the Coalition of Music Education in Canada, is a demonstration of our love of music and our support of music education in schools. It is held across Canada on the first Monday of May and is aimed at uniting us through our music. All of our Inkster students have learned “Our Song” in honour of Music Monday and will sing it as part of the afternoon assembly.

Wednesday, May 7 – Inkster Honour Choir will be singing at the Manitoba Legislative Building in recognition of Manitoba Music Month. They will be singing on the steps in the main foyer at noon. Please stop by to hear us sing!

Wednesday, May 14 – All Intermediate students will be going to see the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra at the Centennial Concert Hall. It will be an exciting concert!

Thursday, May 15 – Winnipeg School Division Honour Choirs will be performing at a concert at Portage Avenue MB Church at 7:00. We have had eight Inkster students singing with the WSD North District Honour Choir – Toni, Terilyn, Mary, Lukasz, Hayley, Brittany, Amy and Abby. Keep up the great work!

French News

All French students at Inkster (gr. 4 – 6) learned a French poem for the Concours d'art oratoire, a French speaking contest put on by Canadian Parents for French. Hayley and Lori represented Inkster School at the Divisional contest on March 25 at Robert H. Smith School. Congratulations, Hayley and Lori, for memorizing your poems and doing such a great job at the Divisional finals. Both girls received a bronze medal!

Recycle, Return, Re-use, Reduce, and Rethink

San Francisco banned plastic grocery bags last year. China is banning plastic shopping bags next month. Leaf Rapids, Manitoba became the first Canadian town in April to prohibit plastic bags. Plastic bags are no doubt convenient, but they don’t last very long and they certainly contribute to energy concerns and also very serious world-wide pollution problems that affects all living things, people, plants, and animals on land and in our waterways. According to one scientific research study, plastic bags take close to 1 000 years to break down and dissolve. Plastic bags are not able to be recycled in our blue bins in Winnipeg, so torn/used up plastic shopping bags must be brought back to plastic bag recycling bins in various grocery stores.

On May 9th we are having a special sustainable development assembly at Inkster School in the afternoon to explain and encourage all students and staff to use cloth reusable shopping bags more and use plastic bags less. This is a small but important initiative to help make our community environment more clean, green, and beautiful with less plastic bag litter blowing around in our playgrounds, backyards, parks, gardens, streets, rivers and lakes. At the end of our assembly we have a special sustainable gift for each and every student and staff member of Inkster School to take home! Don’t forget to ask your child about sharing this surprise with you next time you go shopping!
