The basic purpose of the library program is to support and enrich curriculum. Included in its aim is to provide additional insights and inspiration to make learning exciting and worthwhile. The classroom teacher and the library technical assistant work cooperatively to plan meaningful library activities that help children learn to use various materials in the library for both research and recreation.

Collection development is an important part of the LTA's process. Access to a wide range of materials on topics of interest enables students to develop their independent learning skills and personal interest.

Looking at books together is a mainstay of the library program. Regular book exchanges (once/cycle) allow the LTA to observe individual needs and interests. From these observations, as well as consultations with classroom teachers, the LTA searches for, and shares, supportive literature, audio-visual materials and activities. Story times, educational videos, special purchases and loans are used to build presentations that enhance classroom themes, literary appreciation, and a sense of what there is to learn.

During the early years, students are encouraged to find interest, meaning and enjoyment in the picture book section by listening to, and reading stories. An awareness of authors and illustrators is cultivated. The LTA usually holds a fall and a spring book sale at which staff, students, and parents are given the opportunity to purchase quality paperback books, many of which are Canadian titles.

As they get older (and curiosity strong), students are introduced to, and encouraged to explore, the various subject areas of the library. Reading for information becomes a new thrust, and students have varied opportunities to practice the research process. The Library became fully automated during the 1997-98 school year.
