NOVEMBER 17, 2000
Welcome to our tribute to Hugh John Macdonald's first NSAID day. NSAID stands for "National Students Against Impaired Driving". The day was organized by student council, led by our school president and the council advisors. Here is an excerpt from the speech given by our school president to open the day.
I would like to begin by thanking all of you for taking part in this special day. In early October, Mrs. T. came up to me and told me about NSAID. I became very interested in what NSAID stood for and took it upon myself to look into it further. From there we ordered the NSAID programming manual and read up on how to organize today.
I have been overwhelmed with all of the support from the staff here at HJM and would like to thank them for helping us plan this day.
Many of you may be wondering why we took the many hours to plan this day. I would like to read to you from the manual so you will understand why we planned this day.
Impaired driving is the largest single criminal cause of death and injury in Canada.
There are 4 deaths per day.... that's 1 death every 6 hours due to drinking and driving.
There are 311 people injured and hospitalized every day. That is 21 people per hour or 1 injury every 5 minutes
2/3 of crashes occur on the weekends. 1/4 of all crashes occur on Saturday and over 66% of D&D crashes happen between 6 p.m. and 3 a.m..
Thank you and have a great day!
The day was divided into 7 workshops that all the students rotated though. The workshops were;
ART
VIDEO
MADD
GAMES
PHYSICAL EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL
STUDENT DRAMA PRESENTATION
POLICE PRESENTATION
We started and ended the day with a whole school assembly in the gym.
THE DAY WAS A GREAT SUCCESS AND WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT YEARS NSAID DAY!!!
