May 1996

Louise Staples was a teacher at Greenway School when she organized one of the first Canadian School Safety Patrols, several months before they were instituted on a city-wide basis in 1936.  This team consisted of 14 boys with Douglas McGhee as her first captain.

Miss Staples established in Winnipeg, on a city-wide basis, in 1936, the first fully organized, officially recognized school patrols in all of Canada.  This team, consisting of 50 Winnipeg schoolboys, divided into five squads, received their Sam Browne belts in a ceremony conducted on the steps of Greenway School on May 1, 1936.  She continued her work with patrols at Greenway until 1945.
