The Trip to Kappen
by Elizabeth Pfeiffer

The United Nations sent me a letter asking me if I wanted to go into outer space. They said I could spend as much money as I needed to build my space ship. I said, “Okay, it’s a marvellous idea,” and went to gather up my crew. On July 1st, 2004, my space ship, “The Black Angel,” and my crew are getting the ship ready for when we are in space. We only have 1 year to get there, explore, and get back with natural resources that are needed on Earth. The people that are coming are Tina, Stephanie, Megan, My Family, Kim, Aliza, Scott, Lindsay, Taylor, Kennedy, Julius, Adom, Deon and Farrah. Kappen is an estimated, 100 million miles away. It will take 4 months to get there. We hope we packed enough food and supplies to last our journey. We also have an area on the ship where we can grow and hold our food.
Today we are launching from the launch site at 3:20 p.m. It is 12:00 p.m. and we are packing our clothes and important things. I hope we didn’t forget anything!!!!!! Once we’ve got onto the planet, we’ll find the natural resources and put them onto the ship.

It’s 3:20 p.m. It’s time to launch. “5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0, BLASTOFF!!!!!!”Now it’s 4:00 p.m. and we are in space.

We are about 98 million miles away from Kappen. We have a special kind of fuel that makes us go really fast, so we can get there quicker. But anyways we are having a good time in space, looking at the stars and all of the other things in space. It is a very very beautiful sight. We are going to put the ship on autopilot soon so that we can go to sleep.
Well it’s about 9:00 a.m. the next day. We took the ship off autopilot so we can fly it ourself. We have to eat breakfast and do the things we normally do in the mornings. Such as brush our teeth, make our bed, brush our hair and stuff like that. WOW!!!!!!!! We are only 94 million miles away now!!!
It’s about 11:30 – 12:00 p.m. and we are eating lunch. But of course we put the ship on autopilot so we can eat. We are now about 90 – 92 million miles away now, and it’s only day 2!!!!!

            Two weeks afterward…………………

Well it is the second week now and we are only 75 million miles away from Kappen. We all hope we make it there!! If we don’t then we crashed into an asteroid, blew up or went off course.
          One week afterward…

Well now it is the third week and we are only 61 million miles away!!!!!!!!!! YEAH!!!!!!!!!! We are getting really close now!!! I think it’s about 11:00 a.m. and we are still looking at the stars!!!!!! Wait is that Jupiter? Why yes, yes it is! It’s an amazing site. I wonder what it looks like on the planet.

         About two weeks afterward…

Well we are about 49 million miles away now. We’ve seen many wonderful things out in space, some tiny, giant, pleasing, and peaceful things. We hope, well most of us hope, that nobody will be stupid on the trip!!! Most of us are clever and helpful, when others are much trouble. Some of the space food is disgusting, but that’s okay….. I guess. It is possible that we will make it there and we’re all hoping we do!!!!

One week later…

We are only 33 million miles away!!!!!!!! We are getting so close!! We are having lots of  fun here on the space ship. We stay up late and talk, and do many other things. The pilot of the ship switches with someone else so they can get some sleep.

 10 or 11 days afterward…..

We are only 20 million miles away now!!!!!! We are really really close now. We can almost see Kappen with our own eyes!!!!!!!!!!!! Just 10 – 15 more million miles and we should be able to see Kappen!!!!!! I wonder how big it is, I wonder what color it is. We all wonder many things that we will find out when we get there.

1 week later....

We are 13 million miles away now. “We can see it, we can see it!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is really, really, really tiny from here. But we can still see it!! We hope we get there soon.

      4 weeks later.........

We are 5 million miles away now!! We can see it really, really good. Kappen is like blue and green and some other colors. It is really pretty. It looks like some of the people are coming to greet us in their space ship.  “They are hailing us! “Said Tina “answer their hail“I said "Greetings people from another planet! My Name is Nee-gor-fla" said the friendly alien."Hello!" We all said together.” We need some of your natural resources for our planet, because it is suffering from a critical shortage." I said. "Oh, I see” said Nee-gor-fla. He went to talk to the other aliens about the natural resources. He came back and said, "Okay, we will give you some of our natural resources only for a price," said Nee-gor-fla. "What is the price?" I asked. "You have to help us build our village." Said Nee-gor-fla. "Okay, we will but we only have a couple of months." I said. So we went to help them build their village for the natural resources. We got the natural resources, and made some new friendly alien friends!!

3 months later.........

"Thank you all for helping us get the natural resources!!!" we all said. "No, thank you for helping us build our village!" said Nee-gor-fla. After we said our thanks we had to leave in a special way because it was a special ritual.

4 months later on Earth…

We wrote a letter to the United Nations and it said:

Dear United Nations,

After a very long trip to and from Kappen, we have brought back the natural resources. The planet was very beautiful and the aliens were very friendly. They gave us the natural resources only if we helped them build their village. So, we helped them build their village. When the village was finished it was very beautiful. Then they gave us some souvenirs to take back with us (we hope we won’t lose them!)
