Fred Penner was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He is a Canadian children's entertainer who gives appearances throughout North America. He also had a CBC show called Fred Penner's Place, which aired from 1985–1997 and also once aired on Nickelodeon. As early as the age of four, Fred would make up songs while travelling on the bus with his mother. Fred taught himself how to play the guitar when he was in grade school. He performed in school choirs and pageants. He learned the healing value of music through experience with his sister, Susie, who had Down's Syndrome. Inspired by his sister’s pure love of music Fred made a choice to become a performer. Lucky for us he did. After graduating from university, Fred spent time working with mentally and physically challenged children, using his considerable musical talents to comfort and entertain. In 1977, Fred met choreographer and future wife Odette Heyn, with whom he started a children's dance theatre company. He is now a father of four children, still living in Winnipeg. The first album Fred made was The Cat Came Back. A few of his many popular songs include The Cat Came Back, Sandwiches, Happy Feet, The Bump and You Can Do It (If You Try). Fred has written books based on his songs, including The Cat Came Back, The Animal Boogie, Proud, The Bump, Rollerskating, Ebeneezer Sneezer and The Polka Dot Pony.
