The Effects of Permafrost

Because there is permafrost there are no roads.  It is wet because when the snow melts it can't soak into the ground because of permafrost. You can't drive cars because there are very few roads.

Dirty water from houses go in tanks because there are no pipes underground because of the permafrost.  Permafrost makes the water stay on top. It's muddy and wet so cars get stuck.

Tall trees can't grow in the arctic because they can't put roots through the permafrost. Plants in the Arctic are short because of permafrost (always frozen). There are no gardens. Also, the plants don't have long to grow because summers are short.

It's wet because the water can't soak into the permafrost. The roots can't go deep into the ground because of the permafrost.

You can't build a basement in the Arctic because the permafrost would melt from the heat and the house might sink. It cost a lot to dig, too.

There are lots of mosquitoes in the spring because there is lots of water for them to live in.
