Room 225 - Hours of Sunlight - Winnipeg vs. Iqaluit

We learned that the way the Earth circles the sun changes how people in Iqaluit and in Winnipeg live and meet their basic needs.

First we recorded the hours of day light in Iqaluit, Nunavut and the hours of daylight in Winnipeg, Manitoba for the month of January.

Chart - January, 2002

Each of us charted our results in Microsoft Works and we could see that Winnipeg had a lot more hours of daylight in early January, but Iqualuit was getting more daylight by the end of January.

Chart - March, 2002

We then recorded and charted the hours of daylight in March. Winnipeg was getting more hours of daylight in the beginning of March, but less by the end of March!

We made predictions about how Inuit people met their needs long ago and how they meet their needs today. Then we did some research. Click on the links below to see the comparison tables our class created for the following  basic needs:
Food Transporation Homes Clothing

We learned that because of the fewer hours of daylight in the winter and colder temperatures, there is permafrost in Iqaluit. Permafrost makes everything different. Click here to find out more about The Effects of Permafrost.

Finally, we made a fun (edible) model of permafrost. Click here to learn How to Make Permafrost.
