Inuit Art

by Unique

This is my mask I made it by carving clay. Then it was fired and I painted it. Then I decorated it. It shows a polar bear spirit. I made it because the polar bear was used for clothing. It also showed the Inuit how to crawl on thin ice.

This is an example of an Inuit sculpture by Osuitok Ipeelee. It is made by carving white quartzite. It shows a polar bear sniffing for food.

This is my soapstone sculpture. I made it by carving stone with a file. Then I polished it with sandpaper. Then I rubbed it with my head. Then it got oily. It shows a king block spirit.

This is my print. I made it by tracing the seal. Then I carved out the styrofoam. Then I put paint on a roller and rolled it over the styrofoam. Then I pressed a paper over the paint. It shows a seal. It is important because it gave them food, clothing, and fuel.

This is my engraving. I made it by folding paper in half. Then I drew pictures on one side. Next I colored the back with crayon. Finally I traced over the pictures. It shows an igloo with stars. I made it to experience engraving.

This is an example of an Inuit applique wall hanging by Irene Avaalaqiaq Tiktaalaaq. It is made with duffle and felt and embroidery floss. It shows Good and Evil. This was important to the Inuit because if the Inuit were good, they were rewarded with lots of food.

This is my applique wall hanging. I made it by drawing a picture on felt and cutting it out. Then I sewed it with thread and needle on fleece. It shows a seal sliding on the ice. I made it because the seal gave them food, clothing, tools, and fuel.
