Inuit Art

by Nick

This is an example of an Inuit carving owl by Pootoogook Qiatsuk. It is made from stone and is polished. It shows an owl standing with its wings up. This was important to the Inuit because the owl is in lots of legends.

This is my soapstone sculpture. I made it using a file. Then I polished it with sandpaper. I made it because carving is something the Inuit people do.

This is my mask. I made it by carving clay, then painting it and using materials to decorate it.. It shows a ptarmigan spirit. I made it because people eat the ptarmigan.

This is an example of an Inuit applique wall hanging by Jessie Oonark. It is made by putting embroidery on cloth. It shows a shovel, two people, faces and a girl with an apron on her coat. This was important to the Inuit because with faces they can see and with a shovel they can make homes.

This is an applique wall hanging. I made it by tracing a picture on a piece of paper and then sewing it on fleece. It shows a mosquito. I made it because the mosquitoes always attack the caribou.

This is my engraving. I made it by scribbling crayon on paper and then drawing a picture on it. It shows three igloos, a whale, polar bear and a seal. I made it because the Inuit live in igloos and they hunt the animals.

This is my print making. I made it by taking a styrofoam plate and three pieces of paper. Then we traced one paper and we took our pencil and traced over it with a popsicle stick on the styrofoam plate. It shows an igloo and a polar bear. These are important to the Inuit because they live in igloos and the polar bear taught them how to fish.
