Inuit Art

by Maressalyn

This is my styrofoam print. I made it by drawing a picture on paper and then tracing it on styrofoam. Then I put paint on it and pressed it on a piece of paper. It shows an Inuit baby. I made it because I like babies.

This is my soapstone carving. I made it by filing a piece of soapstone. It shows a big stone. I made it because carving is important to the Inuit people. This is how they support their families.

This is an example of an Inuit sculplture made by Paul Toolooktook. It is made by carvng and filing soapstone. It shows two men wrestling. This was the important to the Inuit because it helped them practise to be strong and helped them prepare for hunting.

This is my mask. I made it by shaping clay into the shape of a bear. Then I painted it when it dried. It shows a bear. I made it because bears are important to the Inuit people for food and legends.

This is my engraving. I made it by folding a paper in half and drawing a picture on one side. Then I colored the inside of the folded paper and the picture I drew on the outside appeared on the inside. It shows a sun, an igloo, a dogsled and fish. I made it because engraving is important to the Inuit people to remember their history and it has become a way to support their families.

This is my applique wall hanging. I made it by drawing a picture and tracing it on felt and sewing it on fleece. It shows a rabbit and a moon in the Arctic. I made it because it is important to the Inuit. They use the rabbit for food and clothing.
