Inuit Art

by Malcolm

This is an example of an Inuit carving of an owl by Pootoogook Qiatsuk. It is made of carved stone and it was polished. It shows an owl. This was important to the Inuit because the owl was very important . Owls were often characters in their legends. The owl was the spirit that took care of the people and nature.

This is my soapstone carving . I made it by carving soapstone with a file and polishing it with sand paper and the oil from my hands and forehead. It shows an igloo with no king block. I made it because it feels very smooth and I'm going to use it like a lucky charm.

This is my applique wall hanging. I made it by tracing a picture on felt cutting it out, and sewing it on fleece. It shows an owl. I made it because the owl is a character in legends.

This is my my engraving. I made it with paper, wax crayons, and drawing. It shows an owl, igloo, ulu, fish, fishing rod, seal, kayak, harpoon and spear. I made it because these things helped the Inuit survive and live.

This is my print. I made it by cutting the bumps off the styrofoam plate and carving pictures on the styrofoam plate. Then I put paint on the picture and pushed the paper on the paint. It shows an owl. I made it because the owl warns the people when bad things happen.

This is an example of an Inuit mask by Edward Kiokun. It is made by carving wood and painting it. Smaller decorations were added. It shows a loon spirit. This is important because the Inuit wish for lots of animals in their hunting.
