Inuit Art

by Kyle

This is my mask of an owl. I made it by carving it and painting it red and white and yellow and blue and brown. Then I added pieces of feathers. It shows an owl spirit. I made it because the Inuit respect the animal spirits. They use the animals to survive.

This is my applique wall hanging. I made it by drawing a picture on paper and tracing it onto fleece. Then I sewed it on to another piece of fleece. It shows a loon on an iceberg. I made it because I like the loon.

This is my soapstone carving. I made it using a piece of soapstone, a file and sandpaper. It shows a spear head. I made it because the Inuit use spears to hunt with.

This is an example of an Inuit sculpture. It is made of stone. It shows a caribou cache carved by John Kuksuk. This was important to the Inuit because the Inuit use caribou for food and need to cover it with stones so that animals won't eat it.

This is my print making. I made it by drawing a picture on styrofoam. Then I carved it out and put paint on it. Then I put paper over top of it and pressed on it. It shows an igloo. I made it because the Inuit live in igloos.

This is an example of a stonecut on paper. It was made by Agnes Nanogak Goose. It shows two Inuit people putting the king block on the igloo. This was important to the Inuit because they live in igloos.
