Inuit Art

by Jonathan

This is my soapstone carving. I made it by filing it into a shape. Then I made it soft with sandpaper and shiny with oil from my fingers and forehead. It shows a husky. I made it because the husky pulls the sled.

This is my mask. I made it by carving clay and painting it and putting on beads. It shows an Eskimo spirit. I made it to show how Inuit people live.

This is my applique wall hanging. I made it by drawing a bear on paper and tracing it on felt. Then I cut and sewed it. It shows a bear in the sun. I made it because polar bears live in the Arctic.

This is an example of an Inuit engraving. It is made with an antler. Then a picture is carved. Then ink is put in the carving. It shows a fish, a walrus, a kayak, and Inuit trading. This was important to the Inuit because they need food from the walrus and fish. They need to travel in a kayak.

This is my engraving. I made it by folding paper. I drew a picture. I opened it and put crayon on the back. I closed it. I traced it again. It shows an igloo, the sun, a fish, a man, and a dog. I made it because the igloo is the snow house. The fish is for food. The husky pulls the sled.

This is my print. I made it by drawing a picture on paper. Then I put paper over styrofoam. Then I carved the styrofoam. I rolled paint on the styrofoam. I put the paper over it and I pressed it. It shows a wolf. I made it because the wolf lives in the Arctic.
