Inuit Art

By Jay Jay

This is an example of an Inuit mask. It is made by carving wood, painting it and adding feathers. It shows a ptarmigan and a spirit. This was important to the Inuit because you could use the feathers for clothing and the eggs for eating.

This is a example of an Inuit sculpture. It is made with ivory, wood, stone, seal skin, lemming skin, sinew, thread and black colouring on board. It shows a woman wearing an amauti and it shows a kayak and a dog sled . This was important to the Inuit so they could have something to wear and they used the dog sled and a kayak to travel.

This is my soapstone sculpture. I made it by carving it with a file. Then I polished it with sand paper. Then I rubbed it with my hands and on my forehead. My forehead started bleeding. It shows a king block. I made it because it is always on top of an igloo and if it was not there it would be cold inside.

This is an example of an applique wall hanging by Jamasie Mike. This is made by sewing with felt applique and embroidery. It shows a snowy owl, husky, raw fish, igloo, a sun and a fishing spear. This was important to the Inuit because they can travel with a husky, they can eat the fish, and get help.

This is my applique wall hanging. I made it out of felt and thread and I sewed it with a needle. It shows a polar bear and a sun. I made it because the Inuit learned how to fish by the polar bear.

This is my engraving. I made it by folding a paper in half and then drawing a whole bunch of arctic things on it and then drawing crayon on the back of the drawing. It shows an igloo, seal, ear tugging, a sun, someone fishing, a polar bear head, and a fish. I made it because it looks cool.

This is my print making. I made it by putting a piece of paper over styrofoam and then putting paint all over it. It shows a polar bear. I made it because I can make a whole bunch of pictures from one print.
