Inuit Art by Garry
This is my mask. I made it by carving the clay. Then it was fired and I painted it and put other things on it. It shows an owl spirit. I made it because the owl is found in many legends. The owl spirit looks after the people and the animals.
This is an example of an Inuit sculpture by Paul Irngaut. It is made of stone, ivory, and black coloring . It shows an inukshuk. This was important to the Inuit because they could use it to find their igloo.
This is my soapstone sculpture. I made it by carving stone with a file. Then I polished it with sand paper and oil from my hands or face. Then I put string through it. It shows a shape of a triangular inukshuk. I made it because it is triangular and if they went hunting they could find out where their igloo is by using an inukshuk.
This is my applique wall hanging. I made it by cutting a shape of an animal from felt. Then I sewed the animal on the fleece and added things. It shows an owl. I made it because owls are an important part of Inuit art.
This is an example of an Inuit engraved scrimshaw by Davidee Itulu. It is made with stone, ivory, and black ink. It shows igloos, a walrus, a caribou, a polar bear, an Arctic hare, a bird, and an Arctic char. This was important to the Inuit because they lived in igloos and they killed the animals for meat and fur.
This is my engraving. I made it with paper. It shows a spear, igloo, owl, ulu, and harpoon. I made it because these things are important to them. The igloo was their home, the ulu was used for cutting meat and skins, the harpoon was used for hunting seals and whales. The owl was a spirit that looked after them and was in lots of their legends.
This is my print. I made it by cutting a styrofoam plate. Then I carved an owl on it and painted the styrofoam circle with a roller. It shows an owl. I made it because the owl is important in the Inuit legends.
