Inuit Art

by Dennis

This is an example of an Inuit sculpture by Paul Akkuardjuk. It is made of antler, ivory, stone, hide, thread and black colouring. It shows a winter camp, a polar bear, dog sled, caribou, muskox and people in an igloo. This was important to the Inuit because they hunt the animals for lots of things like meat, parkas, and bones for tools.

This is my soap stone sculpture. I made it by carving it with a file and polishing it with sand paper. I used the oil from my skin to shine it and I put a string through the hole. It shows a wolf's spirit. I made it because the wolf hunts the lemmings and the caribou in the Arctic.

This is my mask. I made it by carving the clay into a face and firing it in a kiln. Then I painted the mask. It shows a wolf's spirit. I made it because the wolf hunts the caribou in the Arctic.

This is my applique wall hanging. I made it by tracing an animal on a piece of felt and sewing it on fleece. It shows an owl from the Arctic. I made it because owls are important to the Inuit. If the owls did not eat some lemmings, the lemmings would eat all the plants. Then there would be no more plants for all the animals.

This is my print. I made it with styrofoam, a popsicle stick, pencil and paint. It shows a seal. I made it because the Inuit hunt seal.
