Inuit Art by Carla
This is my mask. I made it by carving clay into a shape of a cat and I painted it and put fur on it. It shows a cat spirit. I made it to thank the cat spirit.
This is an example of an Inuit sculpture by Adamie Alariaq. It is made of stone and ivory. It shows a Narwhal spirit. This was important to the Inuit because the whale gave them meat. They made tools out of the tusks and bones. Sometimes the birds ate the whale if it became beached on the sand when it swam too fast.
This is my soapstone sculpture. I made it by carving soapstone with a file. Then I polished it with sandpaper and used oil from my hands and face to make it shiny .It shows a whale. I made it because the whale gives lots of meat and tools can be made out of its bones and tusks.
This is my applique wall hanging. I made it by drawing a picture, cutting it out of felt, and then sewing the felt onto the fleece using a thread and needle. It shows a seal swimming in the water. I made it because the seal gives Inuit meat and skins.
This is my print. I made it by putting a paper on styrofoam and tracing it. Then I made it deeper with my stick. Then I put paint on it with a roller and put my paper on it. It shows a seal. I made it because seals give them meat and oil.
This is my engraving. I made it by folding paper in half. Then I drew a picture on one side. Next I colored the back with crayon. Finally I traced over the pictures. It shows igloos and stars and a moon and a frozen pond. I made it bacause these things are important to the Inuit.
