Inuit Art

by Candice

This is my mask. I made it by carving the clay in a design. Then it was fired. Then I painted it. Then I put decorations on it. It shows the polar bear spirit. I made it because the polar bear risks their lives for the Inuit people.

This is my applique wall hanging. I made it by drawing an Arctic animal on paper, then tracing the animal onto the felt. Then I sewed it on the fleece. It shows two lemmings looking at the sun. I made it because the lemming is an important food for the Arctic animals.

This is an example of an Inuit sculpture of Sedna by A.S. Taleelayuk. It is made of stone. It shows a mermaid-part human and part fish. This was important to the Inuit because Sedna was the goddess of the sea and she gave them food from the sea like seals and fish.

This is my soapstone carving. I made it by carving soapstone with a file. Next I polished it with sandpaper and rubbed it on my hand. Then I put a string through the hole. It shows a seal. I made it because the seal gives the Inuit people food, clothing, tools, and fuel.

This is my engraving. I made it by folding a paper in half . Then I drew pictures on one side. Next I colored the back with crayon. Finally I traced over the picture. It shows someone fishing, killing a polar bear, and someone making parkas. I made it because it is inportant to the Inuit.

This is my print. I made it by drawing a picture and putting the picture over a styrofoam plate and tracing over it .Then I rolled paint over the plate and put the paper over the plate. It shows an inukshuk. I made it because the inushuk shows people where to go.
