Inuit Art

by Ashley

This is my soapstone carving. I made it by filing a piece of soapstone. Then I put a string through it. I made it because carving is very important and fun to the Inuit people.

This is an example of an Inuit mask by Edward Kiokun. It is made by carving wood and painting it. Smaller decorations were added. It shows a loon spirit. This is important because the Inuit wish for lots of animals in their hunting. (by Ashley and Malcolm)

This is my mask. I made it by carving clay, painting it, and adding feathers. It shows an owl spirit. I made it because we are learning about Inuit art. The owl was the spirit that looked after the people and animals and it was in a lot of legends.

This is my applique wall hanging. I made it by drawing a picture and tracing it on felt. Then I cut it out and sewed it on fleece. It shows an Arctic fox. I made it because the fox gives the Inuit some fur to keep them warm .

This is my engraving. I made it with paper and crayons and a pencil. I traced it again and I opened it. It shows an igloo, a wolf, an owl, a fish and an Inuit person. I made it because I wanted to try to make engravings like the Inuit people.

This is my styrofoam print. I made it by drawing a picture on paper and then I traced it on my styrofoam. Then I put paint on it and pressed it on paper. It shows a wolf. I made it because it is important to the Inuit people to show their legends and to tell stories about their way of life.
