Polar Bear Arctic Habitat It's called the Arctic Tundra because it's so close to the north pole. In the summer there are lots of grass and flowers. The soil is frozen 30 cm deep even in the summer. It's called permafrost. There are very short summers. The temperature doesn't get high in the summer. It's covered by snow more than half of the year. The Arctic is found in: Canada, Alaska, Europe and Asia. It looks white and is bright. The water is very cold. There are blizzards. Appearance of the Polar Bear The polar bears have sharp teeth. They have thick white fur. They have a black nose. Polar bears have wide paws with sharp claws. They have a long body, neck, and head with short furry ears. They are large 2.4 to 3.4 metres long (male bears). They weigh about 454 kilograms. Food Polar bears eat fish, berries, seal, walrus, seaweed, grass, eggs, garbage, raw meat, sometimes whale meat and dead food laying around (carrion). It can go for weeks without eating. Enemies Polar bears enemies are people. Adaptations The polar bear can smell far to help it find food. Its wide paws help it swim and walk on the snow. Their furry soles keep them from slipping on the ice. It has a layer of fat to keep it warm. Interesting Facts The polar bear can swim 100 km. from shore. One swat with its paw can kill a seal.
