Wood Work Technology

Grade 7

The grade 7 woodworking Technology program is intended to introduce its students to the fascinating Technology, it tools, materials and processes. Emphasis will be place upon the general lab safety, use and operation of hand tools, machines and power tools. This program will give its students.

Grade 8

The grade 8 woodlworking technology program is intended to expand upon the experiences of its students in Grade 7. More emphasis will be placed on machine and power tool operation, fastening techniques, as well as the safety procedures needed to operate woodworking equipment. In addition, students will take a closer look at the design and planning of both mass produced and custom made products.

Woodwork 15G

In this half credit course, students explore this area through a variety of individual projects and assignments. Students will focus on safety in the shop, correct use of tools and machines, and the design and planning process used in the woodworking industry. All students will be required to build a compulsory project and a second project of their own design. Evaluation is based on notebooks, tests, assignments and project work.

Students who choose this course may further their studies by taking Woodwork 20G.

Woodwork Technology 20G

The woodwork course at the Grade 10 level expands upon the information and skills learned in the Middle School and Grade 9 level. Most of the emphasis at the Grade 10 level is based on machine safety, project design and planning, basic construction techniques, wood joinery and finishing techniques. the student will design their own project, plan the construction process and manufacture the project. Along the way there will be situations where problem solving will come into play, as well as an opportunity to make educated decisions as to what types of wood joints to use for strength and appearnace, wood types and desired finishes on the finished product. One of the benefits of the course is the basic understanding of construction techniques that may help t;he student in repairing or fixing certain problems around the house. Materials are available from the lab for a minimal cost.

Woodwork Technology 30G & 40S

Although there is no prerequisite for taking Wood 30G or 40S, having completed Wood 20G would be a great benefit. These two courses take the basic knowledge and skills acquired in the 20G course and expand upin them. Major emphasis is placed on the design and construction of a project of the students own choosing. Areas of study include: shop safety, design principals, machine operations, wood joinery and finishing techniques. Some of the project ideas that have been manufactured in lab include: coffee and end table sets, chaval morrors, entryway benches, display cabinets and computer tables. At the end of the semester, a student should have all the basic construction principles assoicaited with furniture design. Materials are available through the lab at minimal cost, but some specialty items such as hinges, handles or glass table insers must be supplied by the student.
