Food and Nutrition

Grade 7

Students learn the basic techniques in food preparation. Safety and sanitation, table setting and manners, equipment and measuring techniques are demonstrated during the Food Lab component of the course. Evaluation is based on: daily work (assignments, portfolio and daily self-evaluation), food labs' evaluation and final exam.

Grade 8

Students learn the basics in food preparation. Topics in First Aid, kitchen and food safety, packed lunches, principles of baking, and the importance of breakfast will be discussed. Evaluation is based on: daily work (assignments, portfolio and dialy self-evaluation), food labs' evaluation and final exam.

Food and Nutrition 15G

What's for Dinner? In this half credit you will learn how to plan simple nutritious meals and snacks! Students will become a more informed consumer by reading food labels, identifying supermarket advertising traps, and learn how to make a consumer complaint effectively in the marketplace. The nutrition unit will cover Canada's Food Guide, basic nutrients, their functions and deficiencies.

Note: This course may be used for credit towards the Grant Park Technology Diploma.

Food and Nutrition 20G

We are continually bombarded with information about nutrition and health from the new media, books and diet "experts", but are we getting the right information? The focus of the course is on the nutritional needs of the individual. An in-depth exploration of the five major nutrients: their functions, sources and disease related issues. This program will teach skills that will enable students to make optimal use of the food dollar and proactice meal planning throughout the FOOD LAB component of the course.

Food and Nutrition 30G, 30S

This course is a continuation of Foods 20G. Healthy lifestyle choices are the focus of this course. What do you food a baby, a toddler, a senior and an athlete? The FOOD LAB component will focus of food habits related to family lifestyles, income and activities of individual family members. Students will gain an awareness and appreciation of a variety of food habits and cultures other than one's own.

This course can be taken as a university entrance course for the university of Mnitoab 30S. The student would be expected to do assignments additional to 30G.

Food and Nutrition 40G, 40S

Should I take a vitamin supplement in the winter? Are all additives "bab" for you? This course focuses on consumer issues such as: food additives, organic foods, processed foods, supplements, special diets (vegetarian, weight reducing or gaining diets) and food labeling. The FOOD LAB comonent will focus on meeting specific nutritional needs and the theory and application of cooking techniques.

This course can be taken as a university entrance course for the university of Mnitoab 40S. The student would be expected to do assignments additional to 40G.
