~ In-School Opportunities ~

Senior Years Apprenticeship Option

Have dreams of becoming a chef or carpenter? Maybe you want to learn the art of auto body painting. Students who have completed grade 10 and are 16 years of age have the opportunity to become a student apprentice. For every 110 hours of paid work experience the student completes, these hours can be transferred into a credit to be used towards high school graduation. (a maximum of 8 credits, (880 hours) can be earned through the Senior Years Apprenticeship Option).

WSD School Board Bursary

School board bursaries are available to resident students taking academic courses in any secondary school in the division. The bursaries are awarded to a limited number of students presently in Grade 9, 10, and 11 based on family income and his/her standing in school work during the current school year. ONLY students whose parents or legal guardians reside within the boundaries of The Winnipeg School Division are eligible to apply. Applications are available in Student Services.

WSD and City of Winnipeg Scholarship & Service Award Program

Awards are open to Aboriginal students attending school full time. The program provides a continuing scholarship to selected students who exemplify leadership in both school and community. It is designed to encourage students to stay in school and to consider post-secondary education. It also provides summer employment for two students each year who display interest and capacity in municipal planning, and related fields. 7 awards and 2 job opportunities will be awarded this year. There is one award per grade level (6-12). Applications are available in Student Services.

Second Language Credit Option

Students who are fluent in an additional language may have the opportunity to complete a competency exam for an additional high school credit. See your guidance counsellor or career advisor for more information.

Junior Achievement

Company Program: A Student Venture - An after school program offered by Junior Achievement that allows students to learn howto organize and operate their own business, raise capital and sell shares, create a marketing plan, and prepare a business plan, financial statement, and an annual report. Students (in grades 9-12) have the opportunitiy to receive scholarships for post-secondary education.

American Sign Language Credit Option

Are you a student who is fluent in sign language? If so, you have the opportunity to complete a competency exam for high school credit. Offered twice a year in November and May.

Dual Credit University Option

This is your opportunity to complete a first year university (full or half credit) course taught by a university instructor while still in high school. Successful completion of courses allows students to obtain one high school credit (to contribute to high school graduation), and one university credit.
Courses offered include: Introductory Psychology and Introduction to University ARTS

~ Out-of-School Opportunities ~

WSD and University of Winnipeg Mini Enrichment Course

Ever wonder what it would be like to be in university before you get there? The University of Winnipeg allows high school students the opportunity to explore university by participating in university classes for a week. Students who wish to attend must be recommended by their school principal or guidance counsellor.

Conversational French

Conversational French for 13-15 year olds at St. Bonfiace college teaches students to talk about their thoughts, feelings, and needs in French both inside and outside the classroom. Participants are grouped according to proficiency (beginner to advanced).

Youth Transition

Provides recent grade 12 graduates with meaningful work experience with the Provincial Government and approved private sector employees. Students who complete their 10-14 month program will receive a $3,000 dollar bursary to be used for post-secondary training, in addition to their salaries.

Manitoba Science Academy 6 week high school program

The Manitoba Science Academy offers a 6 week program introducing high school students to hands-on research and encourages them to pursue careers in science and engineering. Program runs from July 2- August 10, 2008. Bursaries and Scholarships are available until May 15, 2008. see http://www.msawhiteshell.com for more information.

Aboriginal Youth Circle, United Against Racism "Anti-Racism Training"

An invitation for youth aged 14-29 to participate in a free anti-racism training program. This training is ideal for those students who have an interest in understanding how biases, stereotypes, and dscrimination combine to create situations where racism triumphs. Phase 1 training occurs in November 2007, Phase 2 training will take place in December 2007. See your career advisor for more details!

House of Commons Page Program

To be eligible, you must be a grade 12 student registered (or planning to register) at a capital university (University of Ottawa, Carelton University, Saint Paul University, or Universite du Quebec en Outaouais). Pages "collect and distribute official documents, link members of Parliament to their Hill offices, serve House Officials in various capacities, and act as messengers for the Speaker, Chair Occupants, Members of Parliament, and Table Officers". Will receive a salary of $11, 236 over a twelve month period. Application deadline: December 3, 2007

UWaterloo Unlimited

High school enrichment program for grade 10 - 12 students. Grade 12 Program - "Roadmap to Research" (Nov. 21st-24th, 07); Gives students an introduction into the art and science of reading academic papers, an opportunity to explore cutting edge discoveries with professors from across the UWaterloo campus, and the chance to engage with real undergraduate and graduate student researchers.

Grade 11 Program - "Design" (March 2nd - 7th, 08); Students spend a week exploring the theme of design from architecture and the environment, to science fiction and virtual reality

Grade 10 Program - "Vision" (May 11th - 16th, 08); Students examine the theme of vision through a plethora of avenues; from eyesight to imagination and fine art to flight - Students are given the opportunity to explore vision in a whole new light. *For further information on any of the above enrichment programs, please see your career advisor*

S.W.E.A.T.

March 24th - March 27th, 2008: The Art Institute of Vancouver's Structured Work Experience and Training Program. Students can learn about the culinary arts, new media, art, and entertainment industries while obtaining hands on experience in the state of the art facilities at the Art Institute of Vancouver. A $45 dollar fee is required of each student who is accepted into the program. Deadline: December 15, 2007

~ Awards ~

United Way Community Service Award

Given to one Grade 11 student from each participating high school in Winnipeg. This student is an active community volunteer, motivates other students to get involved, and connects and works with others to make a difference. Students are nominated by their school.

Manitoba Human Rights Commitment Awards

Call for nominations!! The Manitoba Human Rights Commitment Award and the Dr. Sybil Shack Human Rights Youth Award. Nominations must be received no later than 4:00pm on November 9, 2007. These awards are given to a youth group or young person who has promoted respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms in Manitoba. See Career Advisor for more information on nomination process
