The Newborn -most crucial time for newborn is the 1st minute after birth. -at this time all systems must begin to function on their own. -transition from being a fetus dependent on the mother to being an air breathing independent individual is complex. -infants must breathe, eat and eliminate for themselves -Apgar Score, based on a quick series of tests are given after 1st minute of birth to assess the baby 's physical health. -scores run from 0 to 10 with 10 meaning baby is doing well. -infants with a score of 10 have 99.9% chance of survival. -at 1 year 3.6% of babies with Apgars 0-3 were neurologically impaired. -2.8% of babies with Apgars of 4-6 showed abnormality -1.6% of babies with Apgars of 7-10 showed abnormalities
