Feeding and Nutrition

-pediatrician gives advice regarding nutrition

-only food newborn need is breast milk or infant formula

-advantages to mother and bay when breast feeding

-colostrum=fluid secreted 1st 3 days after birth-rich in antibodies t hat protect the newborn

-breast milk contains all the nutrients the baby needs

-advantages to mother: during pregnancy, mother stores a small amount of fat in preparation for breast feeding. Breast feeding helps get rid of extra fat

        -breast feeding assists the uterus to return to the pregnant size

        -breast feeding assists with the bonding between baby + mother

-disadvantages-some moms cannot produce enough milk

                           -some moms find breast feeding painful

                            -some moms need or want to return to work and won't 

                            be able to breast feed

-infant formula is a good substitute for breast milk

-cow's milk in not advised-

            -contains too much protein

            -too little of several vitamins and minerals

            -low fat milk does not contain the fats and carbohydrates infants 

            normal development

-babies need to feed when hungry rather than on a schedule of 6, 10, 2, 6, 10, 2

- baby's feelings of confidence and trust are enhanced by successful use of  their skills for getting food.
