Course Name: Pre-Calculus Mathematics
Advanced 20S
(PCME2S)
Credit: 1 Credit Recommended
Prerequisite: Mathematics 10F Advanced
(Minimum Final Mark of 70%, or recommendation of teacher)
Course Description:
Students enrolling in this course should have successfully completed the Mathematics
10F Advanced course, or
have the recommendation of their mathematics teacher. The topics studied in
Pre-Calculus 20S are expanded
upon and/or reviewed in greater depth. A thorough investigation of deductive
proof in geometry is explored. The
course is further enriched through the exploration of quadratic functions, trigonometric
equations and their
applications. Students learn how to solve a variety of equations including linear,
quadratic, radical, rational,
logarithmic and absolute value equations. Applications are made to problem solving
as much as possible.
Appropriate technology will be used whenever and wherever possible. Students
will participate in the University of Waterloo and University of Windsor Mathematics
Contest Exams as well.
Requirements: TI-83 Plus Graphing Calculator (recommended);
or scientific calculator
Course Name: Pre-Calculus Mathematics Advanced 30S
(PCME3S)
Credit: 1 Credit
Recommended Prerequisite: Pre-Calculus Mathematics 20S Advanced
(Minimum Final Mark of 70%)
Course Description:
This course continues the Advanced program of studies in mathematics. This course
deals with an in-depth study and/or review of topics that form the Pre-Calculus
30S curriculum. In addition, polynomial, rational, logarithmic and exponential
functions are studied in detail. Permutations and Combinations, Conics, Trigonometric
functions and solving trigonometric equations are often included in the program,
as time allows.
Students are again expected to participate in the University of Waterloo and
University of Windsor Mathematics
Contests.
Requirements: TI-83 Plus Graphing Calculator (strongly recommended)
or scientific calculator
Course Name: Pre-Calculus Mathematics Advanced 40S
(PCME4S)
Credit Value:
1 Credit
Recommended Prerequisite: Pre-Calculus Math 30S Advanced
(Minimum Final Mark of 70%)
Course
Description:
The topics covered in the Advanced Pre-Calculus 40S course include all of the
topics in the regular Pre-Calculus 40S course, studied with a greater depth
and breadth, and with far more advanced problem solving.
In addition, topics related to differential calculus are introduced as time
permits. These include Functions, Graphs and Limits; Derivatives; Computation
of Derivatives; and Rules of Derivatives. These topics are integrated as much
as possible throughout the course.
All students
are expected to participate in the Manitoba Actuaries Mathematics Contest, the
Euclid Mathematics
Contest and the American High School Mathematics Contest.
Requirements: TI-83 Plus Graphing Calculator (required).
Course Name: Calculus Advanced Placement 42S
(CAAP4S)
Credit
Value: 1 Credit
Recommended Prerequisite: Pre-Calculus Math 40S Advanced
(Minimum Final Mark of 70%)
Course
Description:
Advanced Placement Calculus is intended only for those who have successfully
completed the Advanced Pre-
Calculus 30S course in the previous year. The topics studied are prescribed
by the College Board's Advanced Placement Calculus AB curriculum and are selected
on the basis of their usefulness as background material for university studies
in applied mathematics, chemistry, physics, computer science, engineering, administrative
studies and mathematics.
Topics include in-depth study of Functions, their Graphs, Limits and Continuity; the Derivative, its computation and its applications; Integrals, interpretation and applications; the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus; Techniques and Applications of anti-differentiation; and Numerical approximations to definite integrals.
Students write the internationally recognized Advanced Placement Calculus AB exam in May.
Requirements: TI-83 Plus Graphing Calculator (required).
