Did You Know That...

  • Grant Park is unique in offering an Advanced Program of studies from Grade 7 through S4.
  • We attract students from all over the city with the Advanced Program - complemented by our amazing Performing Arts program!
  • Grant Park graduated 5 AP National Scholars in 2004 - our largest number ever. These students completed at least 5 AP exams with an average score of 4 or higher (on a 5-point scale). There were approximately 100 in all of Canada that year!
  • Grant Park offers the widest range of AP courses in Manitoba - we added AP Environmental Science and AP European History in 2005.
  • Students in the AP program are involved in a wide array of extracurricular activities - from athletics to performing arts!
  • Students in the AP program regularly win top scholarships and awards
  • Students may complete an entire first year of university in Grant Park's AP Program!
  • Approximately 65 students wrote 150 AP exams in May 2005!

Grant Park's Advanced Program offers academically gifted students the opportunity to pursue their studies at a level beyond that set by the Manitoba Department of Education.

The program offers Advanced courses in all the major subject areas beginning in Grade 7 and culminates with students participating in the internationally recognized Advanced Placement Program in their Senior 3 and Senior 4 years. Those students who sucessfully complete AP Exams in this program may earn University credit or standing.

The Advanced Program of Studies

Grade 7, 8 & Senior 1

  • The school uses several criteria for selecting students for the Advanced Program at these grade levels - a parent checklist/evaluation; report cards with teacher comments; a set of 3 standardized "abilities" tests; & a mathematics problem solving test. We may also contact teachers for personal references, with parents' permission.
  • Successful applicants study all four core subjects at the Advanced level - Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. French is an option but can be pursued at the Advanced level beginning in Senior 1.
  • Students in Senior 1 are given the option of pursuing a Math/Science stream and/or a Social Studies/Language Arts stream of studies
  • Students will be accelerated considerably in both Mathematics and Science. Students will receive both Senior 1 and Senior 2 Advanced Science credits at the end of their Senior 1 year.

Senior 2 - Senior 4

  • The Advanced Program no longer tests students entering after Senior 1.
  • In Senior 2 & 3, the Advanced English, French, Social Studies and Mathematics courses continue to be "accelerated" and "enriched" versions of their regular S2 and S3 counterparts.
  • In Senior 2, students in the Advanced Sciences pursue S3 Advanced Biology and/or S3 Advanced Chemistry
  • In Senior 3, students in the Advanced Sciences may pursue the AP Chemistry, AP Environmetal Science and the Senior 3 Advanced Physics courses.
  • In Senior 3, many humanities students pursue the AP Psychology program and some may pursue an AP course in Comparative Government, Human Geography or European History
  • In Senior 4, students pursue AP subjects in English Literature, English Language, French Language, Spanish Language, Computer Science, Biology, Physics, European History, or Studio Art
