Climate
Not one state in the U.S. sees the sun right overhead (except
Hawaii.) On the coasts of the U.S. the states have mid
temperatures because the oceans are cool and windy. In the
mountain states they have cool temperatures especially at night.
Forests use the suns raise to evaporate water. This makes the
humid eastern states cooler then the desserts. There is no pacific
climate in the U.S. From the cold Alaska to the humid deserts
there is no pacific climate.
Topography
The U.S. has many types of regions. There are desserts in that are
very hot and dry. There are the Rocky Mountains and other major
mountains. There is the Alaskan tundra, which is not very
environmentally protected. There are grasslands and prairies.
Forests which always are causing forest fires. They loose many
trees each year. There are 3 coastlines. The Alantic coastline, the
Pacific coastline and the Arctic coastline off Alaska.
Rivers and Lakes
There are many streams, lakes and rivers in the U.S. Glaciers, in
the northeastern states formed many small lakes. The largest of
these are Champlain, Winnipedsaukee, Mille Lakes and
Winniebagor. The salt lake in Utah and other basins were parts of
huge lakes. These massive lakes were from the Ice Ages. Floods
often occur in the U.S. Rivers such as Ohio, Tennessee and
Mississippi usually floods in the spring. Then in the summer they
decrease in size. The spring flooding has a large cost on the
government, for ruined homes.
Environmental
issues
In some of the most polluted cities lives are shortened by one or
two years. Los Angeles has had 5,873 early deaths in New York
4,024 in Philadelphia 2,599 and in Detroit 2,123. Every year
64,000 people die because of pollution in the U.S. Suggestions to
reduce particulate pollution include using energy efficient light
bulbs, car polling and riding bikes and insulating homes. Smoke
and dust are big problems for people with allergies. Many
Americans have allergies so it has become a big problem. Smoking
adds to that problem. Another problem is garbage. Many people in
the U.S. litter. The garbage is bad for the environment and makes
the place look dirty. Clean-up days get some garbage off the
ground but its becoming more and more of a problem.
