Paul Kariya

Why I Chose To Research On Paul Kariya

I chose to research about Paul Kariya because I saw him play in the 1998

Olympics and I really really liked the way he played hockey. I also chose him because he is a

hockey player and hockey is one of my favorite sports. I also chose him because he is

a proud Canadian and is proud to play for Canada’s Olympic Men’s hockey team.

Local Information

Paul Kariya’s residence is in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He was

also born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He is 5 feet 10 inches tall. He

weighs in at about 180 pounds. His discipline is Ice Hockey. His only event is Ice

Hockey. The country where he was born is Canada.

Where He Started

Paul Kariya first played on the under 18 team at the 1991 Phoenix cup where he led

the Canadians to a silver medal. He played in the 1992 world junior championship

on Canada’s under 20 team. His team then won gold the next year at the world

juniors. The next spot was on the Canadian national team. In 1993 the world

championships followed by the 1994 championships. The 1996 team almost won

gold. Then Paul was drafted 1st for the Mighty Ducks where he led them in goals,

assists and points. Then Paul won his first of two Lady Byng trophies. He got his

second during an All Star game. Then Paul did something very cool, he got 132

points in just 40 games. In 1992 he won the MVP award. Paul was then the first

freshman to win the Ho Bey Baker Award. He was also the best college player in the

country leading the Black Bear’s to a NCAA championship!! .

Family

Paul’s parents, Testuhiko and Sharon Kariya are both retired teachers. Testuhiko is

a former Rugby player. Paul’s brother Steve Kariya used to play for the Vancouver

Cunucks and his other brother Martin Kariya plays for the university of Maine.  This is very cool by the way.

When He Was Little

Paul was ten years old when he first saw Wayne Gretzky play in person. He was just

like Wayne Gretzky. He started skating when he was just three years old. But when

he did start to skate he wasn’t very good at it. It was because he had weak ankles

and couldn’t stand very well on skates. Everyone laughed at him because he did not

take hockey lessons like most people. He took figure skating lessons. Even his own

classmate said he skated like a girl. Paul didn’t even care what people said about

him! He just liked the feel of skating around the rink. The more he skated the

better he became at it.

Olympics

Paul Kariya has been doing very well this year and has played for the Canadian

men’s hockey team for some time now. He is doing very well with passing and has

passed some really good passes for the team. The part that is really cool is that in

his game against Germany he scored a short handed goal on thier Goaltender.

Hobbies

What Paul does in most of his free time I only know a little. One of the many things

he likes is to watch movies. The other thing he has fun doing is skating of course.

I also saw him on a little interview on T.V. and he said he likes to drive. I would to if

I could. So I guess one of the things he likes to do is drive in his silver car.

What I Think Is Interesting About Paul Kariya

What I think is interesting about Paul Kariya is that he likes to watch movies just

like me. I think he would also be more like me if I could drive. like I said if I had a

car and a set of keys. Also, I think what is interesting about him is that he plays

sports. He is like his dad, and also he is like his brothers and his brothers also play

hockey just like him! But I think that he is very good because he takes on a good

number. The #9 and he takes it on from the NHLs great one, Wayne Gretzky he

played with a #99 jersey on him and I think they are both NHL hockey legends.

The #9 is also the number of Bobby Hull also known as “Winnipeg’s Golden Jet”.
