Statement
The
Winnipeg School Division
The
mission of The Winnipeg School Division is to provide a learning environment
that promotes and fosters the growth of each student’s maximum potential and
provides an opportunity for the individual student to develop the knowledge,
skills and values necessary for meaningful participation in a global and
pluralistic society.

Our
mission at École George V is to create an environment where ALL children,
regardless of differences, will be able to succeed academically, physically and
emotionally to their maximum ability. We
are dedicated to excellence in education so that each child will become a
productive citizen in an ever-changing world.
Code of
Conduct
At École
George V School, all students are provided with a positive climate and a safe,
healthy environment such that effective, purposeful teaching and learning may
take place. In order to achieve
this, students must adhere to our school code of conduct. The following expectations for behaviour have been
established to ensure a safe and positive learning environment for each student:

Expectations
& Responsibilities
Teachers,
Administrators and Support Staff shall:
- Treat students fairly.
- Listen actively and encourage students to explain their
behaviors.
- Implement the curriculum and learning programs free of
bias, discriminatory attitudes and behavior.
- Create a positive learning environment where all students
are accepted and encouraged to develop
self-esteem and respect.
- Encourage the involvement of parents / guardians in
educational decisions involving their children.
- Operate on the premise that school and home work together
as a team for the benefit of all the
students.
- Explain this document to all students and offer
opportunities for discussion.
- Teach and model by positive example.
- Maintain a warm and welcoming family atmosphere.
Parent(s)

Ensure regular and punctual attendance and encourage completion of all school
assignments by their
children.
- Attend school meetings and events and support the school.
- Maintain open communications with staff by addressing
concerns through proper line of
communication. Always approach
classroom teachers first and then follow up with the principal, if needed.
- Assist their children to establish positive attitudes
towards achievement as well as respect for their
peers, school personnel
and property.
- Act appropriately in the school building, behave
respectfully to all.
- Inform the school of problem areas or areas of behavioral
concern.
- Discuss with their children and support George V`s Code of
Conduct.
Students
Shall:
- Make a commitment to promote their academic success.
- Come to class on time with all the necessary materials, ie.
Texts, pens, notebooks.
- Complete assignments and handing them in on time.
- Participate to the best of their ability, in class and
school activities.
- Respect school property and the property of others.
- Respect the rights and safety of others and ;
- Use courteous, non-abusive language towards all.
- Follow reasonable directions from all staff.
- Maintain quiet in hallways during class time.
- Resolve conflict with others without resorting to threats
or disrespect.
- Seek assistance from teachers, counselors and
administrators in resolving conflict situations.
Students,
Staff and Parents:
- Students and staff must adhere to school policies
respecting appropriate use of electronic mail and the
internet, including the prohibition of accessing, uploading, downloading or
distributing materials that
the school has determined to be objectionable. Access to computers, email and
the Internet is for
educational purposes only.
At
George V School, the following behaviors will not be tolerated.

Failure to comply with reasonable requests of staff members which are intended
to improve the learning
environment in the classroom or safe environment in the building.

Damaging, defacing or destroying any part of the building, furniture,
equipment, books or material.
-
Absence from class without good reason.
-
Bringing personal stereos, cellular phones, pagers, toys or any expensive
items etc. to class.
-
Use or possession of dangerous items-possessing a weapon as "weapon"
is defined in section 2 of the
'Criminal Code' of Canada.
-
Disturbing the learning of others- disruptive behavior in the classroom,
disturbing classes in session,
running in the halls.
-
Discrimination on the basis of any characteristics set out in subsection
9(2) of the "Human Rights Code"-
verbal or physical harassment, threats, taunting, biting, kicking, punching.
-
Bullying or abusing physically, sexually or psychologically any person-orally
or in writing.
-
Use of foul language and obscenities.
-
Gang involvement will not be tolerated at school (inside or outside the
school).
-
Use of tobacco on school property.
-
Using, possessing or being under the influence of alcohol or illicit drugs at
school or on school related
activities ( inside or outside the school).
Possible
Consequences ( guidelines only)
The
following consequences are intended to make clear the expected and appropriate
boundaries of conduct. Communication between the school and students'
parents/guardians is essential if inappropriate behavior is more than minor or
is repetitive. Records will be maintained.
- The consequence depends on a number of factors, including
the severity of the misconduct, the
student's history of misconduct, the age of the students, etc.
- Consequences range from a quick reminder or an informal
conference, to formal conferences with
parents, to suspension or expulsion. Other examples are:
1. Detention of student
2. Withdrawal from the classroom
3. Parental involvement
4. Suspension from school
5. Removal of privileges
6. Restitution
7. Behavioral performance contract
The
goals of consequences are:
1. To make children accountable for their actions.
2. To help the child learn from experience.
3. To implement and support school division policies.
4. Again, do not hesitate to call your child's teacher, if you have any
questions or concerns.
PROCESS
TO APPEAL DISCIPLINARY DECISIONS
1. If parents would like to appeal disciplinary decisions,
or if they have any questions or concerns, please
speak to the person who gave the consequence. If not satisfied, please contact
the principal.
2. Adults can assist the school by being role models, by
supporting the school and by occasionally
reviewing the code of conduct at home.
3. If the school calls to tell you your child has
misbehaved, don't feel that you have to give your child a
consequence at home. Instead, give your child a clear message that you want
the problem behavior to
stop.

Please DO NOT arrive at school any earlier.
Students should arrive on time so as not to disrupt the learning of

Patrols are trained to assist our
elementary students to cross the busy streets safely. Patrols are on duty at the following times:

Programs
École
George V School Library
Having books in the home is a very important part
of student learning. We are
encouraging you to enjoy the books your child brings home this year.
We have books for student loan from the classroom and the school library.
In order to get the most for the taxpayer’s dollar, students are
responsible for taking care of the books they borrow.
Students are expected to bring books back to school on time and in good
condition. Students are expected to
take responsibility for any losses or damage to school books, both in the
library and the home reading program. Parents
will be held responsible for any student damage and loss.
Depending on the book this could be anywhere from $5.00 and up.
Physical
Education Student / Leadership Program
In this
program, leadership means having an intentional positive influence on the lives
and behaviours of others.
Students
chosen for this group should be in grade 5 or 6, demonstrate that they are
responsible, reliable, dependable, committed, well-organized and a team worker.
They will become responsible for decisions which have a real
influence on others.
The skills
they develop through this program will apply in many other situations throughout
their lives.
Some of the
student responsibilities include organizing and implementing the intramural
program, writing up morning announcements, equipment organization, computer data
processing and organizing special events and activities (such as Winter Fun
Day).
Students will
meet with the physical education teacher on a regular
basis. The
Leadership group will be chosen early in September.
Intramural Program
At École George V School, we
have an Intramural program which encourages ALL interested students to
participate. These are
games/activities organized for a particular group/grade and are held at the noon
hour. There is NO COST involved to
participate in the program. Students taking part must be ready to
begin these activities at 12:30 and they end at 12:55.
Inter-Scholastic Sports Program
Each year, students at École
George V School have the opportunity to participate in various school sports.
They will compete against other schools.
Student sign-up sheets will be posted at the appropriate times.

Ecole George V School, our guidance and counselling program seeks to assist all
students to achieve a sense of personal accomplishment and self-worth, to value
learning and to treat others in a respectful manner. We will support the development of skills, attitudes and
knowledge needed to become effective learners, productive citizens and
responsible members in a diverse society.

Three major
functions characterize the school counsellor;’s role:
Of these
functions, direct counselling, in which the counsellor helps a child or a group
of children learn to understand and cope with themselves and their environment,
is given the highest priority.
Lunch
Program
The lunch
program for this school year is under the direction of Mrs. Debra Clauthier.
All children must be registered. This
can be done by calling 669-4272. Children
eat in designated areas and are supervised by parents from the community.
Lunch payments
are due on the first school day of each month.
Please put payments in an envelope with your child’s name on it and the
child may hand it in to Mrs. Debra Clauthier or the office.
Student
Information:
We will do
whatever we can to make your child comfortable should he or she become ill.
We are legally unable to administer any medications, drugs or therapeutic
agents without written authorization from a physician.
Parents who wish the school to administer medication must first have
their doctor complete a form which is available from the school office for
safe-keeping. If your child becomes ill or injured, the school wishes you
to know as soon as possible. Registration
sheets should be filled out completely as these are used to contact yourself or
an alternate in case of emergency. Please
notify the office immediately of any changes.
Call Back
Parents are asked to phone the
school office at 669-4482, before 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. if their child(ren)
will be late or absent from school. If your child is absent during the morning
or afternoon roll call and we have not heard from you by then, we will call you
by phone at home or at work. It does save time if you notify us. Students
arriving late are asked to come directly to the office.
Student
Attendance
Parents/guardians
are legally responsible for their child’s attendance at school.
Transfers:
If you are
moving out of the district, please notify the school in advance. this will enable us to prepare a comprehensive report for
your child.
Change of
address and/or telephone number ; Please notify the office immediately of any changes.
Students leaving school
early
Whenever students need to leave
school early, such as for a medical appointment, we ask that the student be
picked up by the parent (or another responsible adult). The parent is to sign
out the student from the office.
Leaving school grounds
Students are NOT allowed to
leave the school grounds for any reason during school hours.
Messages
for Parents and Guardians:
Please make
child care and transportation arrangements in advance and inform the classroom
teacher via a note. Messages will
not be given to children. Parents
are also reminded that students do not have access to a telephone. All phone calls are monitored by the classroom teacher.
Students are asked to make their social plans in advance.
Emergency
evacuation:
Should the
school need to be evacuated for a lengthy period of time we have made
arrangements to have our school populations housed at Grey Street United Church.
If Grey Street United is unavailable, our second evacuation site is the
Elmwood High School.

Bicycles, Roller Blades and Scooters
Students
wishing to ride a bicycle, roller blades or scooter to school must have a
permission letter on file signed by a parent.
These forms may be obtained at the office. The school will not be responsible for any lost or stolen
items.
