Eating Habits

By Lina  and Kristine

Our Science Fair project is about today's teens and their eating habits. We made up a 2 page survey, we handed this survey out to fifty teens in grades 7-9. We got back all of our surveys and calculated our results and made graphs. These graphs were based on height vs. weight. This was to do prove these kids BMI (Body Mass Index.)

SCIENTIFIC METHOD

Opening Thoughts:

How are we going to test this?

Should we do a survey for this?

How many people are we going to test this?

Question:

What are most teens eating habits?

What are their BMI's?

Problem Statement:

What is the effect of the ages 13-16 years on how well their eating habits are?

Hypothesis:

We believe that people between the ages 13-15 will have bad eating habits.

Materials:

-survey with questions -pen/pencil -tape measure to check height

-scale to check weight -paper - 17 grade 7's, 17 grade 8's, 16 grade 9's

-computer

Method:

Step #1: Gather all materials needed to make this survey.

Step #2: Make the survey on computer and print.

Step #3: Make 50 copies of the survey

Step #4: We handed out the surveys to the 17 grade 7's, 17 grade 8's and the 16 grade 9's.

Step #5: We got back all of our surveys.

Step #6: We got all the information we needed and calculated the results.

Results:

Observations:

We saw that most teens didn't like their appearance by looking at the survey. We also saw that they didn't really care how they felt about eating food.

Sources of Error:

Some people that did this survey could have lied about their weight, height or anything else.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, we accept our hypothesis.

Application:

We recommend that most teens should start eating healthier because in the near future their eating habits will get worse and could lead to eating disorders.

LOG BOOK ENTRIES

February 19, 2001 - Today we decided what we wanted to do for our Science Fair Project. Our project is Anorexia Nervosa.

February 21, 2001 - Today we went to the computer lab and we reseached on Anoreixa Nervosa. We printed out all the information found on the Internet.

February 22, 2001 - Today we went to the library to find some more books about Anorexia Nervosa and we took them out. We only found one book.

February 23, 2001 - Today we called the Kids Help Phone Lina and asked them questions about Anorexia Nervosa. We took notes on what the person had told us.

February 26, 2001 - Today we talked to our science teacher so he could give us some feedback on how to test out our project. He suggested that we do a survey. The survey will determine what teens would most likely want to eat and what they feel about themselves. We then started to write down some information to put on the survey.

February 27, 2001 - Today we went to the computer lab and typed out our survey.

March 6, 2001 - Today we started to hand out the surveys to the students from the grades 7, 8, and 9. We photo copied 50 surveys. This means that 17 surveys will be given out to each grade level.

March 7, 2001 - Today we wrote out our Scientific Method. We went to Mr. Winters to ask him how to find out a person's BMI. He then told us to ask Mr. Brinton. Mr. Brinton told us to change our project to Eating Habits instead of Anorexia Nervosa. The reason was because we were mostly focussing on eating habits and hardly anyone can have the eating disorder Anorexia Nervosa. So we agreed to change out project to eating habits. Today we also went to go buy our construction paper for our backboard and we changed our scientific method. We also finished handing out our surveys to the grade 8's and 7's. Today we wrapped up everything for the Science Fair tomorrow.
