Our researched Science fair project topic was on Genetics. We wanted to know how genetics effected us and our characteristics. What we did was we researched all we can about our topic. Genetics is a wide topic so we tried to keep it simple so therefore we researched only what we could understand and if we didn't understand the words we looked up the meaning. We basically researched what genetics were and what exactly makes us look like are parents or relatives.
We choose this project to do because my partner and I were really curious about why we look the way we do. We wondered why do we look like are parents or relatives is it a coincidence or does it have to do with genes and cells. We also thought Genetics was really interesting to learn and to research.
Our Problem statement was how does Genetics effect us and our Hypothesis was we thought Genetics effect our characteristics.
Our Method or Procedure was to research everything we can about Genetics and how they effect us. We researched what Genetics had to deal with, how Genetics work, how it effects us, the language of Genetics and the history of Genetics.
With our results we found that Genetics are the branch of biology that deals with heredity (which is the transmission of characteristics from parent to offspring by means of genes in the chromosomes) and change in similar or related animals and plants. Also Genetics are the features or constitution of an individual, group, or kind. Biologists have shown that factors which cause such resemblance's are passed on nearly the same from generation to generation by a process called heredity. Resemblance's, they say, are transmitted by genes, cell units too tiny to be seen even with a microscope. Then we have chromosomes that are mainly the total of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and protein. The chromosomes within each set vary in appearance. However, each has a homologous (structure in position) partner in the other set, which resembles it in both appearance and genetic characteristics. A given gene is found on only a particular chromosome in each set. It's allele (one of the members of a gene pair which is found in the chromosomes) is on that chromosome's structure in the other set. The alleles are passed on to new cells during mitosis, the division of somatic cells. Mitosis takes place as soon as a sperm fertilizes an egg.
Our conclusion was we thought our hypothesis was correct. We have found that Genetics do indeed effect our characteristics. Genetics deals with heredity which is the transmission of characteristics from parent to offspring by means of the genes in the Chromosome's and the chromosomes within each set very in appearance. Our Application was we thought that this topic is very important to know by either students or scientist's. With knowledge of this, we can create a cure for diseases or scientist's can find out different and really interesting things about genes and cells that people don't even know about. Also we find out how scientists can change cells or genes to make your child have the preferred eye color or hair color that you may want.
The easiest part of science fair was to research information about our topic. It was easy because reading informing was really interesting to learn and read. The hardest part was to put all the research we did all together to make sense. We wanted to put in such a way that people can read it and understand it without giving a puzzled look.
Well we did all right on this but if we had another chance to do it over we would of made our backboard more nicer and we would of explore more of the Genetics area like diseases and what scientists are trying to do based on Genetics. We would try to also understand cells and genes more better because such topic is very complicated.
Like we said before the science fair can be improved do our research and making our back board more nicer. Also the judges asked us questions that we did indeed know on our explanation and understanding on this topic.
The most important thing that I learned while participating in the Science fair was that when doing a project like this you really need a lot of effort and time. We noticed when we didn't put a lot of effort into our work it didn't make any sense at all. So therefore we tried to do our best and work really hard on our Science Fair.
