HOW MUCH NICOTINE IS TOO MUCH??????

By: Kayla and Nicole

PROBLEM

Our problem is what is the amount of nicotine that a smoker inhales while smoking a cigarette?

HYPOTHESIS

Our hypothesis is we think that a smoker inhales 50% of the nicotine in one cigarette.

MATERIAL

For this project our materials were 3 tissues, 6 cigarettes, and 3 smokers.

PROCEDURE

Our procedure is we asked three smokers to do a test to see how much nicotine they inhale in one, two, and three cigarettes. We did this by having the three smokers inhale from a cigarette and exhale into a tissue.

OBSERVATION

Our observation was that the more cigarettes that the smoker smokes the bigger the nicotine intake.

CONCLUSION

Our conclusion is "NO" our hypothesis was wrong, the average smoker takes in an average of 31% of the nicotine in one king-sized cigarette, the rest is chemicals.

APPLICATION

Our application is that no matter how gross or disgusting nicotine is, people are still addicted to the next cigarette!!!!

WHAT IS NICOTINE????

nicotine is the primary component in tobacco that acts on the brain. Nicotine is known as one of the most frequently used addictive drugs that is not illegal. Since nicotine was first identified in the early 1800s, it has been studied extensively and shown to have a number of complex and sometimes unpredictable effects on the brain and body. Most cigarettes today contain 10 mg or more nicotine. Through inhaling smoke, the average smoker takes in 2 to 3 mg of nicotine per cigarette. Nicotine is absorbed through the skin and mucus lining in the mouth.
